colonoscopy and adhesions: Mary53/Thuney

Hi Ladies,

You both had been down there on the adhesions/colonscopy thread.

I had the test today and while I didn't see your post beforehand Mary, I DID ask the dr. about the adhesions. He said a lot of folks that have adhesions do tend to get them in the sigmoid colon region, that I might have a twisted colon. I was knocked out on Versed and another v word(?), so I didn't see the screen.

Sorry Thuney, I don't know if he saw anything, I was told I'll get a call in a few days with my results.

Word for today was one small polyp was removed. I was surprised because I'd read folks over 50 can get them, and I'm 44. I was given a packet of info on Fiber. Hmmm. :-/

Next up, Monday I go to my primary to get a referral to a gyn/onc so we'll see what happens next.

Hi Suzanne, yes it is visicol pills. Thanks for the tips on the vasoline, wipes and pantyliners. ugh. You are so lucky to have this thing behind you (no pun intended. lol)

I was originally given a prescription for Visicol pills. But then I told the dr. that I have trouble swallowing pills that are large, such as calcium ones, and if these were large or couldn't be chewed, could I have something else. He said I could use the phospho-soda that you mix into something else.

I would have absolutely loved to see my colon on a screen! I love to learn about stuff and this would have been very interesting. I guess they don't do it at this place? They mentioned me being in a twilight sleep, but I sure felt like I was in more of a sound sleep.

Linda J, I did read the posts on tips to make it better. The vaseline idea and using flushable wipes ideas were good ones. I also put pantiliners on my undies because of the vaseline. (sorry!)

I had a colonoscopy about four years ago - they sent me down the IBS route with my symptoms - turns out it was a distraction, but, anyway, of course I was dreading it. The procedure itself was a breeze - didn't feel a thing. Got to watch everything on the monitor - they didn't find anything. They had me on IV vallium.  Watching the screen I felt like I was going on an amazing journey through pink caverns! Incredible to see inside oneself. Talk about having your head up your arse! ( Do you have that expression outside of Britain?).  After the procedure I had only the mildest of discomfort, was happy & slurry on the valium.  Everyone out there who is going in for a live TV broadcast from their insides - I hope you all have lovely healthy, clean pink piping! I found it to be a most entertaining show myself; though I expect the drugs had something to do with it!

I am so glad for you that it was not all that bad. I was biting my tongue last night...wish I'd seen the post earlier. But, I think that if they had been better prepared for me I would not have had the amount of pain that I did. They would have just knocked me out further..before the procedure. We almost stopped...It was not pleasant. But, this is what sent me on my journey to find an answer to getting rid of the adhesions. Again...I will be around. We can talk about the body rolling when you are feeling better. Thanks for letting us know how things went for you.

Suzanne--thanks for taking the time to ease everyone else's mind here who is looking at a colonoscopy.  i am glad yours went so well.  I am seeing the dr on Wed to re-schedule mine.  I already have my NuLitely since I was supposed ot originally have it yesterday.

Timok: I was told I'll need another colonoscopy in 5 years. Mom said she was told for her it's 10 years. I thought they started to do them at age 50 and I'll be 49.5 by then, LOL.

Thuney: I don't know what they could see on the screen, I was sedated and didn't see the screen myself. But when they call me, I will definitely ask! I will ask about a twisted colon and also adhesions.

Linda J: Afterwards, I felt pretty good. I did go home and nap, so yes, I was sleepy. I told them I am one who suffers from nausea easily, so they gave me something in the IV for that. I felt some stomach-y mildly annoying pains, but nothing officially painful. I got up and went out with the family to a store for a while.....no need for meds or anything. Did eat lunch, kept it lowkey like on the low residue diet (cottage cheese with a banana mushed into it and a cup of tea.) Supper was back to regular foods, I wanted to eat one of everything around!

What type of prep are you doing????

Hi Suzanne, my prep is prescription pills, rather than the stuff you have to drink. I am dreading it.

i had mine done june 1st i am also 44 they found 2 polyps they came back as non cancer my doc said since they did find polyps i need to retest in 4-5 years

Hi there, glad they only found one small polyp. I go next week for mine and was wondering how do you feel afterwards? crampy? drowsy? any nausea?

I know you are young--but still, only one polyp has to be good!  Plus--I understand a colonoscopy is good for 10 years.

Did I understand you correctly that you won't know if you have adhesions for awhile yet?  And the twisted bowl issue--they couldn't tell that while doing the colonoscopy?
