constriction on colon with recurrent ovarian cancer

I have narrowing of my colon due to recurrent ovarian cancer. I was diagnosed in 2006 with stage 3B and had a recurrence 6 months after completing 1st round of carbo-platin taxil. I had 3 rounds of IV and IP therapy with no results and am on femara. I have a terrible problem with elimination. I take miramax and dulcolax with some success, but worry how long I should be useing the laxative? Is there any other way to treat this problem?

Hi Ronni.... How much popcorn do you eat? Just wondering, as a friend of mine went crazy on the popcorn and ended up in hospital with a bowel obstruction. She has been told not to eat popcorn anymore if she wants to stay away from bowel obstructions. I eat nuts.... lots of nuts, and they seem to work well for me. There's oil in nuts, whereas popcorn seems to be drier, and harder to digest. Just thought I would mention this as those bowel obstructions are not good. I hope you are doing well..... keep up with the red wine though. :-)   Hugs...Helen...

Miralax  should not cause any long term affects  but the ducolax  might. Miralax action is to return the normal perastalsis to the colon, ducolax acts  more as a harsher laxative and can be habit forming.  Drinking water and other fluids is extremely important, adding fiber, oils, fresh fruits and veggies,  control the diet to help with elimination.  I would suggest you get an appointment with a good nutritionist to help you with this. Proper exercize is also very important.  Pain pills and other medications contribute to constipation,  have your doctor analyze these for you.   Good Luck  Marty

I had a resection and still have constipation problems.  I have stage IV diagnosed one year ago.... I take colace every single day rain or shine.. I take 3  2in the morning and one at night.. my oncologist said i could take it forever... also..I use drops which are not available in the states but are similar to miramx.. You need to do whatever works.. I also eat popcorn.. yep everynight with a glass of red wine.. popcorn works like eating bran... Do not worry about taking things.. if you are really bad use a flleet enema...Keep yourself regular it is really important..
