cysts during pregnancy

by GOAT218, Dec 19, 2007 09:33AM
i am 15 wks pregnant with my second child, and have discovered that i have cysts on both of my ovaries.  i am very concerend as i have not been told alot about them and if they can cause any problems during my pregnancy and birth.  they are both at 8 cm long now and i have been getting a bit of pain. i would just like a bit of info and if they need to be removed how is that possible whilst being pregnant and if i will cause problems for me in the future to having more children, and if i am likely to experience more pain than usual during labour and if they can be removed straight after.   thank you

Hi.  I had a recent scare with a complex mass which by the grace of God turned out to be ok.  During the last 4 weeks of fear, I did alot of reading on this subject.  From what I have read, cysts in pregnancy are very common and usually disappear somewhere around the second trimester.  Best wishes.

Hi,  I,m also from the uk  my neice had ovarian cysts during pregnancy and they were very large , she had a laparoscopy where they drain the cyst  and she was home the next day everything went just fine . You may have the type that go away on their own but if they get to be a problem causing pain or making you wee a lot by pressing on your bladder then you should go back to ob gyn and ask them to be removed . You need to ask these questions as you will keep on worrying and only your doctor can answer them. Don,t be fobbed off though if they are causing  you pain . Take care love Angie

Hi. Do you know what kind of cysts they are?   There are so many different kinds, as they said some will just disappear on their own.  Two yrs ago I had a 11cm dermoid and a 8cm mucous cystadenoma.  I had the 11cm dermoid removed by laparotomy but the other one ruptured just prior to surgery (extremely painful).   Some cysts from what I was told tend to grow more rapid when you are pregnant.   Possible reasons as to why they may want to remoe them while pregnant are forst, if they worry of it possibly being cancerous,   pressure on the baby, rupture.      I am pretty certain that the best time to remove them while pregnant is at 4mths, this is the "safe time".    If they do not have to remove both ovaries you should be fine to have another child.   I did not have any problems during labour,, I'm not sure if they would cause more pain during labour if they are not removed.
I hope that you are getting another ultrasound to monitor the growth,  and I think you need to ask your doctor all the questions you have asked on here, and meybe even think of getting a second opinion if you do not feel satisfied with his answers.     Wishing you the best!
