do you think this cyst could be cancer

I am 46 yrs old with a history of irregular periods and simple cysts, I had an ultrasound last October that diagnosed 2 small cysts in my left ovary

Recently Iwent to see my GP as i was starting to have some urinary problems , ie leaking small amounts of urine - especially in the morning with a full bladder - and a slow urine flow. Gp thought it could be the cyst growing.

Ultrasound was done In August  witht he following results A bulky retroverted uterus with 2 posteria all fibroids  measuring 41mm and 23mm, I also had 2 cysts in my left ovary one simple one measuring29mm and another which was 34mm with an irregular outline and containing as focal area of wall thickening posteriorly - no adnexal mass or free fluid>- my GP did not seem unduly concerned by this, and the recommendation to her was that referral to gyn "may be of use" but decided  to send me for  the CA125 blood test - which has come back raised at 212.,

I have been having quite a bit of dull aching over the site of the left ovary , as well as dull backache and some pins and needles sensation in my legs.

beacuse this cyst my doctor has referred  to a gyn /oncologist , and said the only way to be certain is to remove the ovary , but said i could have endometriosis , and the irregularity of the cyst could be that ?

I am really frightened that this might be cancer after my app with the gyn/oncologist  as that was the way he seemed to be talking - I am afraid i just didnt take most of it in .

I have since done a lot of reading on  here and other sites and it seems there are loads of reasons why CA125 could be raised including fibroids and benign cysts - it seems to be that that has made the decision - is 212 a high reading ?

What would your interpretation  of the ultrasound report ( as above) be

my appointment is not until the 27th October -

Hi There
thank you for your complete information.  I would agree that there are many reasons for an elevated CA 125 such as endometriosis.

In your case the CA 125 is a good triage tool for deciding to take a look with surgery as opposed to the other possible strategy which is a repeat ultrasound in three months.
It sure can be nerve wracking waiting ! But your doctors have been making the right decisions.
best wishes

Dr Goodman

just to add on to my original post - I have just had a pre op discussion with my gyn/onc who did a further ca125 last week he has now today told me the level has gone down from 212 to 65 ??? although I am really pleased with this I am aware it is still nearly double what is should be ! and I obviously still have this cyst ( irregular edges and focal thickening) we feel more confident now biut am still concerned that this could still be bad news - what do you think? if it was cancer do the levels drop without treatment ever?

his intentions are now to look at the ovary with a laprascope take the ovary out - then decide if anything further needs doing

thanks for your advice

sounds like a perfect plan.
Yes we do CA 125 levels fluctuate with the menstrual cycles in the setting of endometriosis
best wishes
