doxcil or cisplatin?

doxcil or cisplatin?

I have a reocurring  or residual ovarian Ca.

I am worried about doxcil
I was operated on 2005 Took carboplatin and taxotere.

Ca 125 never went lower than 18. it continued to rise slightly (i also have RA) an inflamatory disease. The DR thought it was causing the rise in Ca 125.

I am  due to start pelvic radiation.. The cancer is not in the abdomen. Also she wants me on doxcil. Her other choice was cisplatin... I am  afraid of heart damage w/ doxcil

Is  this all there is?
Thank you for any help

Dear Suzanne:

Welcome to the forum. Doxil almost put my wife in remission. She was like six months on doxil and it was a very easy chemo for her except for the blood counts and some mouth sores which have medications. They have a test for the heart called like "MUGA" to clear you of heart complications but she only took it after around four(4) cycles. My friend Onc had a patient who was from 12 to 15 cycles on Doxil and it is only given once a month or every three weeks and you could even vary the dosage.

I want to know whether you are platinum-resistant, meaning that you have recurrence within six(6) months after CarboTaxol or Taxotere because the Taxanes or platinums like Cisplatin are better options than Doxil if you are not platinum resistant. Your Onc should know it.

Hello Suzanne... No, that's 'not all there is', as there a many other drugs 'out there' for you to try. I've had Doxil (Caelyx) and with only 4 treatments, it worked really well, and was still working for 3 months after I finished the last treatment. I had a scan on my heart before starting this one, but providing you don't have it 'long term' your heart should be o.k..
The only side affect I had was many sore mouth ulcers.
Cisplatin is more severe than Carboplatin, especially on the kidneys. I've not had Cisplatin, but am presently on Carbo/Taxotere, as you were, and getting really good results from this combo.
If you have any imflammation, that can cause a rise in your CA.125, but at 18, that's quite good. The lowest I was able to manage was 12. Before I started my present treatments my CA.125 was 7500.
I think if I had to choose between Doxil and Cistplatin, I would go for Doxil. I know of other ladies who have had Cisplatin, and it's very harsh, and most had awful nausea.
Wishing you all the best with whatever you decide.
*Hugs*...Helmar...

Suzanne, there are so many options. I can probably name twenty combinations of chemo, hormonal. biological drugs than can put you on remission. If you want to see go to the archives on the medical side of this forum. You will see the asnswer of Dr. Goodman to this question.
