enlarged uterus and ovaries

by whatfiftybucks, Apr 06, 2006 12:00AM
Im 25 years old and was recently diagnosed with diverticulitis. I had an abscess in my sigmoid colon and was treated with antibiotics  .  The abscess was drained over a month period and caused another infection along my abdominal wall which caused me to need surgery to clear out old blood and a clot that was causing it. GEEEZZZ! Anyway, during my hospital stay and over the course of about 3 months Ive had 5 CT scans (pelvic and abdominal), ultrasound and transvaginal ultrasound.  I was told that I have an enlarged uterus and ovaries and that I need to follow up with my gyn.  I have an appt. in 2 weeks and now my mind has started going all over the place. I have been having pain in my left side and when I lay on my stomach I can feel a mass there and it gets more painful. If I had ovarian cysts wouldnt I have been told after the results of the transvag US?  I also "think" I have found a lump in my right breast near my armpit.  Ive been doing self exams since my mother passed from breast cancer years ago and Im getting scared now.  Im only 25 years old and Im afraid no one will hear me because Im so young.  I dont want my age to rule out the fact that I could possibly have cancer.

Hello and welcome to the site...GEEZ you poor kid! You have sure been through the ringer. Diverticulitis is miserable. Many woman with ovarian problems such as cysts also seem to have bladder or bowel problems, I did and I notice lots on this site do. I had an enlarged uterus too and it was nothing at all. Please try not to panic (so hard to do).
When you ovulate, it is normal to have pain so that could be what you are feeling. We women do normally have ov cysts that come and go. Most resolve on their own.  99% of cysts are benign.
What is your breast lump like? Is is smooth? Does it move? Was it there last month?  Where in your cycle are you? You can definitely ask for a mammogram when you see the doctor if it helps put your mind at ease.
I am so sorry about your mom. Of course your mind is going crazy right now.  Honestly, I would bet FIFTY BUCKS (or more) you are just fine :)  I hope your gyn is patient and kind and makes sure to thoroughly check you out and help you.
Keep writing us, there are lots of sweet (and funny!) women on here who will sympathize with you.  We have a Cyber Party on Saturday for laughs too, drop by!
Hang in there, two weeks seems like such a long time I know,
Love, Katie

First off, thanks for the comfort.  I really appreciate that you took the time to respond to me.  Thank you.  The lump is near my armpit and it feels a little larger than a pea, it doesnt move. It was there last month, but now that I'm "believing" its there, Its scaring me more and more.  I have also have sharp shooting pain through only my right breast and right shoulder blade every once in a while, but now its becoming more frequent. My cycle ended the third. I know it could be anything or nothing at all.  All I can do is wait and see what my doc has to say.  I think I have done my part in noticing a difference. I just hate having to deal with my colon, uterus, ovaries and breast all at the same time...and its costing me a heck of a lot more than fifty bucks...lol...Thanks for the invite for Saturday..most likely Ill be there.  Its not like im  going anywhere with this healing hole in my stomach. :) I need a good laugh.           thanks again,
                             patty.

Hello there.  It is so nice to be able to talk about this stuff to people who understand.  My appt. is on the 17th, and I just hate having to wait.  Im still healing from my abdominal surgery, and this has got my nerves on end.  See ya tonight.  Thanks.

How's the lump today?  I have fibrocystic breasts which scare the heck out of me. I get those weird stabbing pains too.  Try cutting out caffeine if you haven't already. Hang in there, the 17th is only a week away!

lump is still there, and my breast is seeming to hang lower.  Its appearance looks different too.  I had lost some weight after my surgery, but I dont think its appearance would change that much only on one side.  This sucks.  Thanks katie, I really appreciate your concern and cheerfulness.   Patty.

Hmmmm...don't you hate this stuff?  Geez eh. Drives you nuts. Maybe it is just picking up on your fear and is feeling sad low and droopy.  OK that was really bad (sorry). I would be more worried if it was larger and more swollen than its twin, ya know?  But you should of course tell your doctor about any change in breast size.  Mine do that sometimes though, now that I think about it.  I do have one that seems to disappear more on occasion that the other one. Weird. It never really occurred to me til just now.   I'd just bet breasts could even change depending on how much activity you have done lately (as in, lifting weights, working out, painting, you know?) Does the lump hurt? They do say that most lumps that are scary do not hurt, but I have also heard that is not always true.  I hate the way they brush you off when you are young.  I guess it is because, statistically, they just don't see much cancer in really young people, so they get complacent.  Do you have anybody you could bring with you?  Someone who would be a good advocate for you? A real bad tempered rotweiller perhaps?!
Try not to worry, Katie
