had pelvic ultrasound, more needed?

by dramaqueen, Aug 18, 2005 12:00AM
I have had some unexplained symptoms in the last 6 months. Abdominal cramps, bloating, vaginal discharge, and back pain. I had a paternal grandmother die of Ovarian cancer in her late 50's. I expressed my concerns to my doctor. He did a vaginal ultrasound and found some cysts, but no signs of anything else. My question is, is whether or not any other tests beyond the ultrasound should be done to detect the possibility of ovarian cancer (such as blood test for CA125), or for other types of ovarian cancer. Or should I be satisfied the ultrasound was enough?

Hi, usually an ultrasound is good for seeing any problems.  The CA125 is  usually not very realible as it can be elevated for other reasons (your period, an infection, stress, benign cysts).  You said your dr found cysts though and this should be followed up to make sure they clear up.  Cysts are very common for women but although rarely they can be cancerous and you should mention about a repeat ultrasound to monitor them to ensure they dissolve.
