hot flashes and ovarian cysts could it be cancer?

I am having surgery July 6th to remove a 9 cm cyst on my left ovary. I had a hysterectomy 4 years ago but keep both ovaries. I have had 3 ultra sounds over 4 months and the cyst has gotten bigger. I do not have pain but for the last week I have been getting what I think are hot flashes, sweats and feeling cold. My Gyn had me have one last ultra sound last week but had said if it got smaller that would be good because it would be benign. Now what does that mean can this be cancer? I am having a laporotomy and not a laporoscope this makes me nervous also. I will be 49 on July 8th. I am not scared just want more info as to why I am having these new symptoms. I feel full have painful gas and I am so tired. Cancer does not run in my family except for prostrate cancer. Does any one have some info for me? Has this happened to someone else? Is it possible it could be cancer or just medapause with a ovarian cyst. I don't know much about hormones and I have not found any info in my case.

Hi Angus

I will also add Hpv is not a sexually transmitted disease ..it is passed by blood and you need to find out if it is active or you have the anti body ..as more then 50% woman clear it on there own . Have you ever had a blood transfusion ? Been in contact with anyones blood ? You need to figure this part of it out and if you have had a blood transfusion ..if it was after 1981...you will need to have the blood services where you are from ...do a trace back as you may be eligable for some part of the class action suit against the Red Cross .

But ...first things first ....takecare of your cyst ...collect yourself , have a good and speedy recovery and then you can investigate the HPV..

As for you symtoms ..it very well may be unforunate timing ..You may beginning peripause coupled with the ovarian cyst upsetting your hormones giving you hot flashes ..

As for the full feeling and painful gas/indigestion ..this is a symptom of of ovarian  cysts ..

I wish you all the best ..
We are here for you anytime ..
Keep us posted...
Take good care of yourself ...Hugs....Lex

I'm so sorry to hear about what you're going through with all of this.  The good thing is that you're getting it taken care of soon.  You asked about recovery time in your post.  Since you're having a laparotomy, you should expect to have restrictions on lifting for at least 6 weeks.  In addition to lifting, pushing and pulling are also not good for you.  Driving is off for at least 4 weeks.  I don't know what your home situation is, but it would be helpful if you had someone to assist you with some of the things that we all take for granted...lifting heavy pots and pans, ironing, mopping and vacuuming.  You'll get specific directions for your recovery from your doc.  Resist the temptation to rush your recovery.  With all of the work that you're going to have, you wouldn't want to risk having your incision open or even a hernia.  I think I'm going to have a tshirt made up with the following saying: "You deserve a complete recovery."  My thoughts and prayers will be with you.  Please keep us posted as to how you're doing.
peace,
Anne

Don't have time to bank blood surgery is in 4 days. I also have irritable bowel and if I take pain killers it kills me. I get so sick I don't know which is worse the pain from surgery or the constipation and nausea and feeling of weakness so bad I can't do a thing. I am a mess. I better double up on the stool softners and pray. You had surgery this week how do you feel I am so sorry to hear that. I am glad to hear about the hot flashes but I am still concerned it may be cancer if it is I will deal with it. The funny thing is I worked in a cancer center up until Sept so I have seen a lot. Now that it's me I forgot everything or I just don't want to think about it. I am so glad I found this site I have no one to talk to. My husband is scared so I can't talk to him and my family is not supportive. I have 2 sons one is 11 and he lives with me the 17 year old won't talk to me because of the divorce. I have a lot of other medical problems including Fibromyalgia and all the lovely conditions that go with it that is where the bowel problems come in. My bladder is in a sling so I know I am going to have bladder pain too I usually get catherterized for releif. I know I will have to deal with hormone problems since he is taken both ovaries. Any advise on meds for that I am getting a little of what is coming now and I don't like it. Is there any natural hormones I heard they are better but who does it. I live in NJ. I am so stressed in the middle of all of this we have moved into a old house we fixed up it is 40 min from the old one and I couldn't move everything in time before this surgery. Now I have to pay for 2 places and I don't know when I will be able to finish the move because of the recovery time. Here's another question how long is it before you can do things again I have to get out of that other place or it will cost me a fortune. I am so sorry I know my problems are so small compared to others. Thanks Linda you have no idea how much you are making me feel better. Feel better to you too.

Thanks Annie.........Everyone is saying the same thing about not rushing to finish unfinished work too. I can't wait until this is over. What doesn't kill you will make you stronger right. I am also going to ask for Zolfran it is a wonder drug but I don't know which pain med is best for me because of the complications with my irritable bowel. I know I won't be able to deal with the pain but there has to be some meds that limit constipation out there. I hope it isn't cancer too. This is how my life is nothing easy but I am still here.

Remember though, with the HPV, if you simply get a pap test 2x per year instead of 1x, you will catch dysplasia before it becomes cancer. My gyno told me that and he's right. So there you are with that :)

Many benign cysts grow as well. Don't panic about that. Mine didn't change for 10 months and I just had it removed laparoscopically on Wednesday and it turned out to be on my fallopian tube!

Bank your own blood ahead of time and that of trusted friends who are your type. They will put you on a morphine pump afterwards and your only worry will be going to the bathroom and they will have you on a good stool softener to take care of that.

Thanks Linda...........I also had a positive Pap for HPV which was a surprise for me I have been with the same partner for 10 years. I have now learned that this also can cause cancer. So..I can be having hormonal changes and still have this huge cyst. It scared me that the doctor said IF it got smaller it would be benign but it got bigger so I don't know what to think. I am stressing so maybe I am just making matters worse. I am not looking forward to this surgery. I have a lot of scare tissue from the hysterectomy and I also had my gallbladder and appendix removed. The doc tells me it is going to be difficult and I may need blood transfusions and he could perferate my bowel etc. Any advise on what to expect as far as recovery and PAIN.

The symptoms you describe aren't typical for ovarian cancer. It could be the cyst is disrupting the hormonal cycle, as they sometimes do. Hot flashes are usually hormonal.
