mucinous ovarian cancer

My mother has stage 1c mucinous ovarian cancer. For this she had surgery to remove he tumor and now she has had first of six taxol/carbo treatment. The next is due within 3 weeks. However, I have heard that this particular form of ovarian cancer does not respond well to the traditional treatment. Therefore, does anyone know what treatment would be more useful? As an underage I am not allowed to the meeting my mother has with her doctor and, hence, I do not receive any information directly on, for example, why this particular treatment is given to her.

I am terrified of loosing my mother. My father died three years ago in a car accident and never in a million years would I have tought that I would also loose my mother before being adult. I will deeply appreciate any help on this matter!

Thank you for your reply.

I have been thinking about this topic a lot couple of days. I am still concerned. Does this mean that my mom won't recover? I am really worried since the marker has not gone down at all within recent treatments. Moreover, mom is so ill always after the treatment that should she skip the last treatment? If it doesn't have an effect what would be the use of taking that?

Don't be discouraged that the number hasn't fallen drastically with each Chemo.  Some doctors have a comfort zone with it being between 2 and 35 and some doctors have a comfort zone with it below 20.  In either case, your mother's counts are good and I hope that is how they will stay.

My dx was more advanced than your mothers and I think my final count after my 6th treatment of Chemo was around 11.  However, with every doctor visit, mine slightly  increased (past the comfort zone) and because of the increase, my doctor recently put me on a hormonal treatment to keep me Chemo free as much as possible.

After your Mom's Chemo is completed and her numbers remain stable, I think both of you will be real happy.  Prayers and good wishes to the both of you.  Angie

Hello All,

I wanted to ask you about CA-125 marker. My mother has had following development in CA-125 during her five treatments: in first 42, in second 32, in third 16, in fourth 17, in fifth 16.

Therefore, I am deeply concerned on why the marker has not gone down within the last two treatments. Is this sign that the treatment is not working? To my understandig this figure should be around 9.

So glad to hear your news. I had stage1grade2 and had six courses of taxol/carbo. I had my CT scan in August and it was clear. My CA125 (a marker, but not a very reliable one) was 9 (it had been 34 before my surgery--you will read about ca 125s in the thousands). The recovery rate is very good for stage 1. You and your mother (and I) were very lucky that it was caught so soon. You are in my prayers.

Hello All,

I received great news last Thursday and thought I would share it.

My mother was having her third taxol/carbo treatment in the hospital and she was used as a test case presented to medical students by professor. They went through my mother's case and the best part is that it turned out she has more then 90% possibility to full recovery. I had not even dared to dream of such a high possibility of full recovery as ovarian cancer seems to be very hard to treat.

I am so happy : )

I had the exact same diagnosis as your mom....I also was on carbo/taxol ......I finished my last chemo in October of 2005.  Right now I get check-ups every 6 months.....my next check is in October.....so far so good!
Also, if your mom wants you to go in with her to get your questions answered, I have no doubt whatsoever that her doctor would have no objections!   This is a scary disease to all of us who are touched by it and the imagination can make it even worse.....the unknown is always frightening.  I know my kids all wanted to know everything that was going on and why.....I was so lucky to have them here for me....they were scared but did better when they knew all I was experiencing was normal....whatever "normal" was.
Hang in there, keep asking questions and give your mom my best!  Take care.
Peace.
