ovarian cancer follow up

Hi there,
My mom,54 years old,has been found to have Ovarian cancer 4 years ago, when she went under hysterectomy for abnormal bleeding. No CA125 had done before the operation. both ovaries were involved as well as bladder, no ascites, no other involvement.
She had a full chemotherapy course before her second look operation, were omentum was removed because of its involvement. Her sencond course of chemo started soon after wards.Since, then she has routin follow ups, checking CA125, CAE,abdominal and pelvis sono.
Just recently she has developed this vague pain in her bones, in sacralarea, and terrible abdominal pains, and some times diarrhea.
her Last week CT was normal, CA125 within NL range.
I wonder if it can be related to her condition or it is some thing completely irrelevant to her diagnosed disease???
I appreciate your help and care
Thanks alot
Hosnieh

Dear DR.  from : Sherie
I have been dx with stage 3c ovarian ca and surgery was done 4-14-2007. I took 6 cycles of IP carbo/taxol with Iv Taxol. Ca125 dropped from 1221 to mid 300's. Started doxil Sept 06 through May 07. Switched to Topetecan and Avastin combo, CA1235 139 now. A lot of stomach problems with three partial bowel blocks resolved with liquid diet, NG tube, REglan and pain meds IM. I am 45 years old and very active, tolerating chemo side effects well. Do I need to be researching next line as I have never gone into remission and are my stats better with the use of IP even though I never went into remission? How often should I request CT scanas lot of pain luq toward the back. Could be trapped gas verses asciates? Do you have treatment plans that I can review? i was an OB/Gy nurse for 22 years. I am now 44 years old and have no intentin of giving up this fight. Please hlep with education and options. Quality of life is important to me as I still have a lot lof living to do. Thank you

Dear Hosnieh,

It sounds like your mother has done so well! But one always lives with the worry that the cancer will come back. It is very reassuring that her scans and blood work are normal.

I would suggest that you ask her doctor about the following evalaution:

-colonoscopy to check for diverticulitis
-check the stool for blood
-check the stool for infection and Clostridium difficile infection

If her evalaution is all normal, she should explore some dietary changes to see if that helps her symptoms. people can get adhesions which can cause these symptoms. or they can have developed food intolerance.

Finally, she has now been menopausal fro 4 years, she may be developing osteoporosis and ache joint. You should ask her doctor about getting a bone density test
best wishes
