pocs

I was just curious about the pocs disease and how it will affect my daughter. She is only 16 and we just found out that she has it and I'm wondering about the side affect of medication and if there is a good possibilty of her having children later in life?

Hi there!  I'm happy that the appointment went well.  The pill will help with having regular periods (shorter and less cramps!)  I am not too sure about metforim I was never put on it-- I wish I was!  I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 16 and it was very scary because I went through it alone-- my mother wasn't involved at all.  I think it's great that you 2 have eachother. I am heavy in my mid-section which my doctor tells me is because of the PCOS.  I was heavier in my teens than I am now-- I'm 24. After a while my hormones became me "regular" and I thinned out a bit.  I was so self-concious too(still am a little)--- it's so normal to feel that way.  I also was an early bloomer which didn't help. The fact is EVERYONE is self-concious about something--- it makes people feel better when they put down others because they are insecure too!  It's easy for me to say this now because I've been through it but I remember it well--- no one is perfect-- there is no such thing! Why not try the medication for a while?  If you are unhappy with it then stop taking it?  I think it would be better to try it then never give it a chance!  Also-- "the pill" made my stomach upset so I took it before bed.  You can get through this!  If you have any other questions feel free to ask them!  You are in my prayers!

Hey it's me again. My daughter went to her appointment today and everything went great. They put her on the pill and on metforim to help with her weight. Hopefully it works, and they said that they would follow her closely and monitor her meds and condition basically forever. They also explained to her that pregnancy should be fine, and if she has any problems there are things that they can give her to help with conception. She's here and would like to ask you some questions.. Hey its me umm. how old were you when you got this POCS and werer you big to i'm just wondering because i'm pretty heavy and i can't seem to loose my weight and the dr. said this metforim should help but i'm not sure if it will i'm kind of thinking that it'll make my weight worse then it already is and that is a big concern to me because i'm like the biggest out of my friends and it sucks cuz i'm so self conscience of myself when i'm around them and every one at school cuz they're always talking about how there big and i'm like hello look at me and i don't know if i can trust this metforim cuz usuaully nothing works with me and i just don't want another disappointment out from it so that is all i gotta ask so nice talking to you.

Thank you for the info. To KKells527, my daughter is going to a obgyn for the first time this week as she was refered by out MD. They also said to have a ultrasound done again in a month to monitor that larger cyst on her right side. I'm just very worried for her and what the long term effects will be for her. Even at sixteen she knows she wants to be a mom and the chance of not being able to do that really upsets her. Thats why I have so many questions. They are also talking about putting her on the pill and another one for her weight. She has alot of weight gain through her middrift, which they say can be a result of this. Both of her sisters are very small and she has battled her weight just the last few years. I'm hoping that getting her started on a medication for the condition will help. Thanks again for all the info and if you have any other ideas or info, please tell me.

Thanks again, if my daughter has any questions, would it be o.k. to let her post a message to you and ask you questions. She is a little embaraced about this, but she might need to talk to someone that has this and has delt with it in everyday life. Thanks again, I'll check in with you after her appointment and let you know what they have to say. Amy

otistee,  I understand your concerns as well as hers!  Your daughter and I sound extremely similar.  My sister and my mother are extremely thin and petite but I am heavy around my mid section due to the PCOS.  I think it is so important for your daughter to go to a gyn that she likes-- its so scary the first time especially when you know "something is going on".  I didn't like my first gyn because she made me feel uncomfortable.  I now see one who is fabulous. Before I was on the pill I had about 7 cysts on both ovaries.  I was just recently taken off the pill and I only have one now.  As far as child birth goes,  it's normal to be concern about this.  I worry everyday... but one good thing is that you are on top of everything that is going on. I have been told so many stories about being able to concieve children the "conventional" way from woman with PCOS.  I know a woman who had 8 children with a quarter of one ovary.   I think that it's great that you are so conerned and aware of what is going on with your daughter.  I'm sure that just having you with her makes her feel so much better!  The best of luck to you and your family!  You are in my prayers!
Sincerely, Kristin

Hi otistee.  I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 16 also.  I am now 24 years old.  I was put on oral contraceptives just to regulate my hormone levels.  The purpose of "the pill" is to prevent ovulation which causes the cysts to stop forming.  An important thing is to have ultrasounds done every 6 months to a year to monitor the cysts.  I was confused in the beginning... there are cysts that are functional which are consisitent with menstruation.  Just recently an ultrasound picked up a large "unfunctional" cyst on my right ovary.  With my history of having PCOS and being on the pill this was concerning.  This is why I emphasize how important it is to have ultrasounds to monitor the cysts.  My gyn is a specialist in fertility and she said that PCOS is something that can "work it self out"  the effects on being able to conceive or not any different for someone without PCOS.  If you have any other questions I hope I can help!  I hope this information helps!
Take Care!

There is a website dedicated to this condition.  I believe it is called Soul Cysters. Possibly at www.soul-cysters.com or something like that.   You will  be more likely to find the information that you want  on that website.
