sometimes after sex with my husband I experience slight bleeding - usually it is when he is in a position where I feel deep penetration and it sometimes hurts (then we stop and continue is a different position). I'd say this has been happening for a year or two maybe , it was not often enough for me to recall especially since I get pap's every 6 months and they have always been normal. It happened today so it has got me worried. I had a vaginal sonagram last month because I was 3 weeks late with my period and they said everything looked normal. What should I do?
You don't give your age, which would help enormously.
Some women will experience bleeding with intercourse if they have just finished their period, if they are close to ovulation (mid-cycle), or are about to start a period. Bleeding after intercourse usually means either the skin lining the cervix or vagina is thin or inflamed, or there is an anatomical lesion on the cervix such as a polyp or a precancerous or cancerous lesion. But a normal Pap and pelvic exam within the last year makes cancer highly unlikely.
Your doctor should be able to tell if there is an anatomical lesion causing the bleeding, or if the vagina is thin due to low estrogens and just gets irritated with intercourse (your being 3 weeks late with your period tells me you may be experiencing some fluctuations in your periods, which is normal before menopause). The thinness of the vaginal skin and pain with sex indicate the lining of the vagina may be the likely problem. It may be that you have low estrogens such as may be seen in menopause or with the absence of ovulation, in which case the vaginal tissues may have been thinned so much that a small amount of friction from intercourse may cause the bleeding. Sometimes the bleeding is not from the cervix, but rather from a tear in the vagina; tears can happen with vigorous sex or if you are dry (which, because certain positions seem to bother you more, may be the problem, also).
And lastly, and I do not mean to scare you, but you may want to either question the lab that is reading your pap slides, or consider having another doctor do it for a second opinion, on the off-chance that the problem is with the way the cervical cells themselves are collected and distributed on the slide. Not all doctors are created equal, and it may be worth the peace of mind to you to pay out of pocket to another doctor who comes highly recommended. And if the doctor you see now is an HMO doctor, pay a little more and go to one outside of your plan - they're usually better.
thanks for your response - I am 34 years old, 2 children ages 6 and 4, and I have always had fairly regular periods except for the last 2 where 1 was 1 week early and other was 3 weeks late. I do not suspect any lining damage and the pain that occurs during these episodes is in my lower abdomen ( I think uterus area.) I have used 2 doctors, both are reputable and as I mentioned I go every 6 months for a pap and exam. If my cycle is regular this month, I should be getting my period any day, but the bleeding has occured before both after my period, mid month and to be honest it could have been anytime of the month - I just do not remember. However, to my best recollection it happens when my husband is a liitle more vigorous than usual or in a position where I feel deeper penetration than usual. I guess I feel like my uterus or my cervix is being stirred or hit. Can this cause bleeding? Does the bleeding have anything to do with my ovaries? Thanks
Hi, I've had irregular papsmear results once before (about two years ago). At that time I had a wire loop excision and have not had any irregular results since. I'm concerned because I had intercourse last night and have been bleeding since about lunchtime - not a great deal but enough to be of concern I think. There was no pain or bleeding at the time - only since. I also have some abdominal discomfort - not unlike having a period although I'm mid cycle. I'm also on the pill and therefore am very regular with periods so I know it's not that. I'm not even 100% sure where it's coming from.
I am 30 yrs old and have one child. I have just experienced having some bleeding after sex with my husband. I do have fibroids outside of my uterine wall. I was told that in Oct 02. I am also on day 10 close to ovulation. I want to know what is your comment on why I was bleeding. Could it be both factors? Thank you.
I am having similar problems. My period was more than a month late. My husband and i have been trying for a baby for almost 2yrs so i was hoping for pregancy. I went to my ob and he ruled out preg. they found 2cyst on my left ovary that together are tennis ball sized. i had my yearly pap test done and I cramped and bleed afterwards. this has never happened before. Anyhow my pain worsened and i began to spot after sex and was in extreme discomfort only i hurt on my right side. The doctor suggested that i had referred pain....no it was a baseball sized cyst on my right ovary. both ovaries now had cysts and were touching each other. this caused some bladder problems. Sex was out of the question. The large cyst on my right side ruptured and the bladder and constant pain left. but the two on my left are still there and penetration during sex hurts and i spot afterwards. i am only 25 and the doctor is discussing surgery to remove the cysts but also assurs me they are benig. I have my doubts. If anyone has had a similar situation they would like to share it would help
The original post that you responded to was almost 5 years old. If you go over to the ovarian cyst site, there might be someone there that could better help you or else steer you in the right direction as where else you could ask. This is the ovarian cancer site.
