uti's

i have been having recurrent bladder infections since june. one each month actually. 2 of them followed by yeast inf. too. i am going to be setting up yet another appt for a ua this coming week, and this time unlike the other times, ill be able to take a little bit stronger antibiotic. i had been breastfeeding my daughter previously. i have since stopped that though, as i had to have a nuclear medicine HIDA scan of my gallbladder and the isotopes would trasfer to my daughter.

anyway, if this is another uti, as im sure it is, ill get something a little stronger to get rid of it. after reading some more of the posts in here i have noticed that some have also had recurrent uti's. is there a connection between them and other things that im not aware of? is there something more i need to be talking to my dr's about because of all of them?

oh, i also wanted to tell gatsby, that i dont have an appt w/a 2nd oppinion yet, but i did get my gyn to set up my u/s for the 21st and my appt w/her will be a couple days after that. this is opposed to waiting till october for the u/s.

i am so glad i found this site. my husband is an amazing man, and he listens well, but there is something to be said about having the opportunity to talk w/other women that are in the same boat!! thank you all.

I finished a 6 month course of Cipro in June for recurrent UTI's.  My doc says once you have one and treat it and it comes back again, chances are, you're going to have to take a prolonged course of antibiotics to kill it.  Mine stemmed from the fact that my tumor was so large, it pushed everything in my abdomen up...kidneys, liver, uriters, etc.  My uriters developed a slight curve that would not allow them to drain properly.  Therefore, the bacteria collected since I was not able to get rid of all the urine.  After the tumor was removed, with time, they have straightened back out properly, and hopefully, I am through with the infections...and the Cipro.  That stuff kept my stomach torn up, therefore my CA125 hovered around the high range.  Now that I am off them, my CA125 has fallen 8 points over the last two months.

Best of luck to you.  I hope you are able to get rid of them.  It's such a pain...literally and figurativly to have to deal with that all the time!

Please, please, please don't put yourself on ever stronger antiobiotics. You might have interstitial cystitis which does not respond to antibiotics.  All the stonger antibiotics are going to do is create antibiotic resistant bacteria in your body and you'll be seeing more infections of other parts of your body if you follow this course.  Get a book by Larian Gellespie called, "You don't have to have cystits"  (or something like that) and you'll be guided on how to treat what seems like bacterial bladder infections but isn't.  In the meantime get yourself some cranactin and take it religiously (NOT cranberry juice--has too much sugar), cut out red wine (if your drink it) and other foods that are high in the same molds and acids that are found in red wine.

Ditto the comments on the "stronger" anti-biotics!   Aside from the imaging and cessation of breast-feeding, have there been other changes in your life (foods, drinks, a seasonal treat, a new favorite food or beverage, etc.) to which you might be having a reaction?

Immediately after your previous rounds of antibiotics, did your doctor perform any follow-up testing of your urine to verify that the course of the medication did indeed end the infection?    If not, then the problem is possibly not that you are suffering from recurrent infections but rather that you still had   the original infection.  Often with UTI's, one round of medication is NOT sufficient to cure the infection.  So, the patient thinks that he or she is infection-free, when the patient truly is not, and after a week or two or three of ending the medication, the symptoms return.   In such cases, (which are horrifyingly common, by the way,) the patient needs a month or two, continuously,  of a simple, "mild" antibiotic to cure the infection, not a strong medication that will cause other problems.

Last but not least, has your husband had his urine checked?  Even if he does not have symptoms, it can be possible that he is also infected with a UTI, and that he keeps, unknowingly, returning the infection to you.

Oh, and I should have added that yeast infections are a very common side effect of antibiotics.  So it is very likely that the treatment for one problem - the urinary tract infection - is causing the other problem - the yeast infection.

mickeyvicky, in reference to your questions.....yes, after the 1st and the 2nd uti's she ran ua's to check for bacteria to see if the infection was gone. with the second uti it was believed that i also had passed a kidney stone. a little while after i thought i was all clear i developed the yeast inf and the NP just called in a prescrip. for diflucan. that appeared to clear things up. well about a week after that i started having symptoms again, and this time i was super sure if it was the onset of a uti, or yeast. the NP called in diflucan again. well here i am and i still have many of the symptoms, but no longer the d/c, so im thinking uti. i have an appt this afternoon w/her to talk and decide whats up. im really hoping that we can get to the bottom of allllll of this very soon. i am going in today armed w/a little bit more information or at least some more questions, thanks to you ladies, so i am very appreciative.
