what does septated cystic mass mean?
I had an inner and outer U/S done in the ER that found a septated cystic mass on my left ovary containing eccentric wall thickening and calcification. I had my CA-125 test done yesterday and have an OB/GYN appt. on Tuesday. Has anyone heard of this finding? I'm not sure what a septated cystic mass is...also, I am at work and have a very physical job requiring lifting and climbing ladders, etc. Should I get a restricted work order? My abdominal and back pain is moderate now, but has gotten extreme with no warning. Thank you and my thoughts and prayers are with you all. xoxo from Arizona

Dear MickeyVicki, Thank God you are back to your old self! I can't wait to be...I am at work today with my jeans unbuttoned, wearing my fiance's big shirts and feeling lousy. Cramping bad on my left side and I just started to bleed. The doc said just to monitor it for heavy flow to see if it's hemorraghing (sp?) or not. I am thankful for a real nice supervisor who is letting me take it easy this weekend, rather than running me ragged here. I didn't realize you could have endometriosis without ever having symptoms before! I hope to fair as well as you did and thank you again for your insight and support! xoxo from Arizona
Yes, I had the problems in the "bowel department" too! I also had more frequent indigestion and migraine headaches. I guess that I can simply say that I was having problems 'top to bottom'. Shortly before I put all of the pieces of the puzzle together and realized what my real problem might be, I thought that I was just falling apart all over.
No, I had never had the slightest symptom of endometriosis, but when my doctor began the surgery, it was obvious that I have a terrible case of the disease. There were implants all over my abdomen. I am just glad that I never suffered from it!
I had a laparascopic procedure in which the surgeon went in and "bagged" my large cyst in order to test it for abnormal or cancerous cells, then the cyst was removed (along with the ovary and fallopian tube which were both damaged by the large cyst.) It was benign, fortunately. I stayed one night in the hospital, at my doctor's request. The blood vessel that serves the ovary must be cut in the surgery, and this blood vessel branches directly from the main vessel through the abdomen and has a relatively high pressure in it. Staying overnight allowed the hospital staff to monitor me for any leaks in the sutures. I went home the next day, in good enough condition to stay home alone, with family and friends who stopped by to check on me several times a day. In two weeks, I was more or less, but two more weeks passed before I truly felt that I was back to being myself again.
After the surgery, my doctor recommended that I have six months of Lupron Depot to stop my monthly cycles and hopefully stall the return of the endometriosis. Because even regular bcp's have side effects too bad for me to handle, I declined. I did take a higher dosage of the progesterone medication to see if that would help. Of course, I was taking progesterone when I developed the endometrioma in the first place!

MickeyVicki, I have the same symptoms that you've had! I have been going to the doctor and/or ER for the past 3 months complaining of a strange "contraction" type feeling in my upper left abdomen that radiates "tingles" through to my back. Also, really bad back spasms, leg and foot pain (sometimes just walking makes me cry), extreme unexplained weight gain (I can't fit into any of my cute clothes and feel like a pig) and now I am 2 weeks late with my period (my other periods, although heavy, were always like clockwork). My belly is all bulging and cramping and this past Monday (after working all night Sunday night) my fiance took me to the ER since I was doubled over in pain. This was my 3rd trip to the ER and the first 2 times they just checked my heart (didn't listen to my symptoms at all!) and medicated me for the pain. FINALLY, this ER doctor listened to me, did a CT scan which indicated the cyst and then he requested the internal and external US that confirmed it and got the size. Thank God! I've also been reading up on Cushing's disease, before I even considered the problem to be ovary related. I had (or have?) polycystic ovaries and had to be on clomid to get pregnant 23 years ago. My last child was born 18 years ago without any fertility drugs, and my period was normal ever since, even tho I did have a few instances of cysts that dissolved with the BCP. So, now I have to wait til Tuesday to find out more and am thankful that I was able to get into the OB/GYN that quickly. I also have a colonoscopy scheduled for the 26th since my bathroom habits have changed drastically as well. I can't thank my loved ones enough for being there for me, especially my fiance. He has been so supportive through everything with my mom and now this. I also want to express my gratitude to everyone on this site....It is very reassuring to know that I am not going through this alone. I have never been diagnosed with anything endometrial related.....are you problem free now? How was the surgery? Was it through a laparoscopy? I had my children (22 year old twins and an 18 year old) all c-section, then had an abdominoplasty 5 years ago, so blowing up like this is extra painful since my belly was so tight. Morning, Gina! Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. Mine are with you and everyone else on this site as well. The past few months have been hard on me and my loved ones, as we almost lost my 81 year old mother right before Christmas and with that stress I put my own medical issues on hold. Now I hopefully will get to the bottom of it and come out of it cancer free. I just have to have faith that God won't give me more than I can handle, right? I'll be sure to keep you posted and thank you so much again!

Due to the fact that I was already having perimenopausal symptoms that helped to disguise my condition, it was not until the bloating and the cessation of my monthly cycle that I truly put all the symptoms together and sought professional help. At surgery, the complex mass was found to be an endometrioma and it had more than doubled in size since the ultrasound a few weeks before the surgery.

Hi azpowergirl - Just wanted you to know that I also live in AZ and am so sorry to hear you are in such pain! There are some amazing women who post comments on this site. Each with their own experiences and knowledge to draw from.

Dear xray2u, Thank you so much for your information. I suppose I shouldn't be digging for an answer until all of the testing is done, but I am trying to calm myself down about all of this before-hand. It's tough still trying to work, feeling like my whole middle section has been run over by a semi and not wanting to take pain meds at work. None of my pants fit...I've gained 30 lbs in just about 2 months and I'm just miserable. I guess it's really out of my hands and I just have to pray that the doc can remove whatever he finds and it won't be malignant. Thank you again for everything! xoxox from Arizona
I wouldn't say more likely to be cancer but it makes it more worrisome to some doctors. When they are simple cysts, they tend to go away on their own. Because it is a complex type of cyst, they ususally linger, require testing, and usually surgery to find out what it is.
