wound problem

by gma718, Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM
Hi Everyone...Still recuperating but I am 90% better thank god...Went to the Doctor last week he took me off the wound vac but  my wound is still open and he wants dry dressings on it only. I was on the wound vac 2 weeks and a couple of days and let me tell you what a difference how it healed the wound.  I was wondering if anyone else had the problem of the wound still oozing and still slightly opened and how long till it healed all the way..I had the hysterectomy on 5/7 and the resection of the bowel on 5/15...my scars are so disgusting I cant even look at them since I needed retention sutures...I have not looked at the opening as it is under neath my stomach so when the nurse doesnt come I change it myself without looking. I still find my stomach hard in certain areas and bloated..I am finally driving and I know how lucky I am but having a full hysterectomy and all the complications has taken a small toll on me. Also, I keep thinking I am going to get my period..how weird is that.

I remember telling my doctor the same thing....that I kept thinking I was getting my period!!!  For me it must have been wishful thinking....don't worry it stops!!!  Also takes a while for your body to level out, so your hormones still haven't settled in.

When I had my first surgery, my hosptial roommate had an issue with her hysterectomy wound not healing...she was in the hospital on some sort of drainage machine (it was new at the time - 7 years ago) for about a month.  Evenutally it healed and so will you....lumps and bumps will also settle in...you had major surgery and the body needs time to heal.

Glad to hear that you are up and about.

Be well!!!

Yes, thank God every day you don't have this. You now have a new lease on life. I wish I had that. You've been through a lot but in time you'll be back in good health and even stronger.

I had surgery 11 weeks ago today and my wound is still a bit open.  I was going everyday to the Dr and having it cleaned out twice a day.  My hubby got the lovely job of the evening cleaning..........how romantic is that? YUK!   I was on antibiotics for 8 weeks and now have been released from the Dr and have resumed normal activities.  I am still waiting to be fully healed but just ignore my 2nd bellybutton now HA!  Maybe I should get it pierced........HA!  I am no stranger to wound separation, 2 yrs ago I had the same thing and stayed open for 12 weeks.  2 yrs ago I had it packed and cleaned daily.  This time we did not pack it and cleaned it out twice a day.  Last time I had several infections, this time more antibiotics and less infections.  I did not try a wound vac.  I am a bit overweight but not diabetic or a smoker (all risk factors)  My body just stores the drainage and will not absorb the excess, causing my incision to pop.  It's a pain but it could be much worse.  I am not a patient person but oh well.  Good luck to you and try not to worry about it.
