2.4 cm ovarian cyst

I got my pelvic ultrasound at past 12 in the afternoon (Jan.7, 2012) and the result was, I have a 2.4cm cyst..
No need to worry about the other thing inside my ovary except for that 2.4cm cyst in my left ovary.. I'm kinda worried..
I don't know anything about Cyst that's why I tried my very best to get some info. about this. What will I do? Is there a cure for this or is this dangerous? Any suggestions or comments or piece of advice will be appreciated well.. Thank you in advance..

Most ovarian cysts go away on their own. An estimate is to wait about 2 to 3 menstrual cycles.  Your doctor may prescribe oral contraceptives to help disintegrate the cyst on ovary.  95% of ovarian cysts are benign (non cancerous). Surgery becomes necessary when there is a chance of the ovarian cyst rupturing, some abnormality in the cyst, cancer, the cyst doesn’t go away or grows, and other complications.

The following are possible risk factors for developing ovarian cysts:

History of previous ovarian cysts

Irregular menstrual cycles

Increased upper body fat distribution

Early menstruation (11 years or younger)

Infertility

Hypothyroidism or hormonal imbalance

Tamoxifen (Soltamox) therapy for breast cancer

Welcome to the community. I'm not sure I understand what your doctor told you. He/she said you are high risk (for ovarian cancer or for developing ovarian cyst?) since you don't have PMS any more? Having or not having PMS does not have anything to do with ovarian cancer risk. And as a matter of fact, hysterectomy reduces risk for ovarian cancer because it causes changes to the ovaries. Maybe he/she was saying you are higher risk for developing ovarian cysts since you had a hysterectomy. That would make more sense. Ovarian cysts are very common and MOST are non-cancerous (benign) regardless of whether or not you have your uterus.

If you do not have a family history of ovarian cancer, then this cyst is very unlikely to be ovarian cancer. And with it being small, the standard of care would be to monitor it via periodic ultrasounds because most cysts go away on their own in 2 to 3 cycles / months. If it looks suspicious, you should see a gynecologic oncologist. What was your doctor's treatment recommendation? You can get a copy of the scan report which will describe the cyst. Feel free to post that information here if you'd like more input. You could also take that to another doctor for a second opinion if you are not comfortable with your doctor's recommended treatment.

Hello. I saw your post. I'm sort of in the same boat. I have been battling ovarian cysts for atleast 6mths that I know of. They started off as simple functional (fluid filled cysts) and then these last few have been complex. They have always ruptured causing lots of pain but went away in a few days or so. But I just went to the ER the other evening bc I was doubled over in pain and they did an ultrasound and found out that I have a 8cm mass on my left ovary and a 2cm complex cyst (half solid half fluid) on my left. That's all I know. I am still in lots of pain and on pain meds for it. The best thing to do is to see a gyno oncologist. I have been told they are specialists and the best in knowing what to do with these awful things. It's scary but yes birth control and hormone treatments CAN decrease the cysts in size SOMETIMES and can help you from not getting anymore. For me that didn't happen unfortanetly but I have heard from many women that it helped them. Just have faith in your doctor and don't expect the worst. And if it ruptures it will be okay. It will be painful but not life threatning. The more you know about them and what you have and what your options are the better. I go see my gyno oncologist on Friday and I'm hoping to have surgery bc I have been in pain.for three wks straight and quite frankly I'm done with it all. Im hoping its not cancer and I'm hoping I don't have to have either one of my ovaries removed but I know if that is what happens than that is what has to happen to keep me from being in pain and potentially saving my life. Best of luck to you
