6 cm Nodular complex ovarian cyst

by anc86, Dec 12, 2008 04:05PM
I am 22 years old with no family history of these types of cysts. I was just told today by my gynocologist that I have a 6 cm complex ovarian cyst with that is nodular. I wasn't expirencing any pain until about 3 Sundays ago (right before my period). He told me that there is a worry for ovarian cancer but they won't know until they do surgery and take it out. I am so nervous and so scared that it will not be benign. I have been losing weight, but I just thought it's because I've been stressing out over school, work, and now this. And i know one of the symptoms of ovarian cancer is unexplained weight loss. Has anybody out there had this and it turned out to be nothing! Please let me know, im so scared!

I had a 10 cm complex cyst and it was benign.  Most cysts are benign, honey; even complex ones.  There's a little more care taken when dealing with a complex cyst because it gives it just a little more chance of it being cancerous, but most of them are not; they just still need to have the precautions.  Cysts are very rarely cancerous in a girl your age.  I'm sure you have nothing to worry about, but I will pray for you.  Don't stress over it; sometimes we make things worse because we overthink them and make them bigger in our heads.  It'll be ok.  They have taken out bigger cysts that were benign. My family has no history of cysts either.  Lucky us, huh?

But it scares me that this thing is not benign because they ultrasound report says it is "nodular on the surface". I guess that has worrisome of cancer written all over it. Even though they say it is less likely to be cancer because of my age, I'm still scared because my boyfriend's best friend just died of cancer and he was only 22. Too many emotions at once, I'm going crazy!

Your boyfriend's best friend probably died of a different kind of cancer though, right?  Please don't worry too much.  It's normal to worry when something is inside us that shouldn't be there and we might need surgery, but seriously, most cysts, complex or not, are nothing to worry about.  It's easier said than done, but we all put ourselves through this torture in our heads.  I did it too.  My cyst was complex and they also told me that it was a bit higher risk of it being cancerous, but most aren't.  It was benign and I just hurt myself more by worrying so much about it.  You'll be ok, hun.  What else did the doctor say about the cyst?  Did he explain to you exactly why he's more concerned with it?  They have to be more careful when it is complex, but as a precaution, not because they expect it to be cancerous.  I totally understand you and I wish I could make you feel better... I hope you get through this fast so that you won't worry too long.  Did the doctor tell you if you have PCOS?  I have PCOS and have read that it can make you either gain or lose weight.  I, unfortunately, gained weight, but perhaps it was the opposite in your case.  Try not to worry, ok?  It's pretty common and everything turns out ok most of the time.

The only reason why my doctor is concerned is because the ultrasound report stated that it's "nodular". Meaning it's not a smooth surface where I guess most cysts have a smooth surface?
