7cm Cyst - Remove or not?

Hi, ladies,

I am 20 years old. I've had a history of kidney stones, so when I started to have pain on the right side of my back, I assumed it was another stone. Two weeks later, I was still in on/off pain but noted the pain wasn't as bad as my typical stone. I went to my urologist, who ordered a CT scan, which indicated a 7 cm cyst. The urologist referred me back to my primary or a gynecologist and made the whole thing sound very urgent. When I called my primary, she was very concerned and explained that a gynecologist would probably like to drain it or remove it entirely. Two days ago, I went to see a highly-recommended gynecologist, who ordered a sonogram, which showed a 6x5cm cyst on my right ovary. She told me to start birth control pills next month, to schedule a sonogram after my next period in 3 weeks, and to restrict exercise to lessen the possibility of rupturing the cyst or twisting the ovary.

I am absolutely freaking out. I've had a 2.3cm cyst rupture 5 years ago, and that pain was so bad that I passed out. I've had an incredibly dull, strong pain in my back and sharp, quick pains in my side since last night, and lying down does not help. I cannot get comfortable, even with a heating pad. I hate taking painkillers, so I am avoiding that. Should I find a doctor who can aspirate it under U/S guidance, or should I find someone who will remove it, or should I just wait and see? It's finals week at my college next week, and I am starting a pharmacology fellowship the week after. Has anyone had a cyst this big that has been fine for a few months? Has anyone had one this size that ruptured?

Please help; I'm such a worrier.

Thank you!!

Did they mention what type of cyst it was? Was it just a functional cyst?  Most cysts will shrink while on the pill but not Dermoid or Endometriomas.

A cyst of that size they usually try the pill then if it shrinks they wait another 3 months, if it stops shrinking then they will remove it. I think over 4-5cm they want removed.

If it ruptured it would hurt I can tell you that.

I would find out what type of cyst it is. Did he mention Endometriosis to you?

Hi Mari,
I just finished reading your comments. You say you had a cyst rupture
5 years ago and that the pain was so bad , you passed out. I know you
said its your finals week next week, but your health comes first.
Based on your post, this sounds urgent to me. I'm a worrier too.
I would make an appointment with your primary care giver, describe your
symptoms and let your primary advise you the best course of action.
The best of luck to you. Eve :)
