Bilateral Ovarian Cysts and endometriosis

I was just recently dx: w/bilateral ovarian cysts...left side 2.0 cm and 2.5 cm on right.  I just turned 30 and have been on bith control for 5 years.  I was also dx: Intercystial Cystitis (IC) a little over a year ago and taking ELMIRON.  I had several GI tests before a CT scan was done revealing the two cysts. I had left lower abdominal and flank pain for about 2weeks measuring 4/10 for pain before resently resolving.  I faxed over the report to my GYN, and she is suggesting endometriosis b/c I have bilateral cysts and have been on birth control.  I have never had problems w/pain during, on or after mensus or had irregular periods.  Would the first sign of endometriosis show up as cysts and be a logical dx: considering my prior health?  I also wanted to know if it is possible that these may be functional cysts and that they may resolve in time since my pain has resolved?  Is it safe to "wait and watch" since the cysts are small and are newly dx?  My annual exam is due in March '06; is it safe to wait and do an ultrasound then if I do not have reacurring symptoms?  Thanks.

I can tell you from my personal experience that it is indeed possible to have a terrible case of endometriosis, and still have suffered no symptoms of the disease.

Depending on the type of cysts, your doctor can indeed just watch and monitor the cysts.  That process of wait-n-see is often used for small, simple cysts with thin cyst walls.  On the other hand, large cysts or simple cysts with thick walls or complex cysts with solid components raise the chance of the cyst being cancerous.  Yes, it only raises the chances by one or tso percent (from 1 to 2 percent to perhaps 3 to 4 percent) but it is an increase, and one should consider this increase when making a choice about the next step.
