Cysts

I have a 8.2 cm cyst in my left ovary .. I'm going for a key hole surgery next mth and my gynae mentions that he wants to remove my left ovary at the same time.. What's the after effect on the removal of the left ovary ? Will there be a lost in hormone production and I have to be on hormone pills ?

Hi,
I echo all the other posts. Just wanted you to know that the procedure isn't bad at all. And I have heard the same thing regarding only one ovary. The other ovary functions for both.. good luck and keep us posted.

I'm 55 and had my 10 cm cyst, left ovary and tube removed in Feb. Obviously I'm too old to worry about hormones but it's true, if you have an active ovary left, it will continue to produce the hormones you need. Some women noticed a slight change in their cycles for a few months but then settled into a routine.

For me the surgery wasn't bad at all. I had the 3 incisions, my doctor was able to bag the cyst and ovary and remove it all. I had considerable bruising on my belly which was kind of cool. The first couple days were tough - had to move slowly getting up and down but after that I could feel improvement daily. By the end of the week I felt pretty good. There will be some restrictions - no heavy lifting, driving for a bit. They'll explain it all to you on the day of the surgery. Hope it goes well for you.

Hi. I do not have any experience in this area, but I have read numerous posts of women who have gone through this. From what I have read, the removal of just one ovary will not affect the hormone production. I believe the remaining ovary takes over completely and there is no need for homone pills. I am sure someone with experience will be along soon to give you better information and also correct me if I am wrong. You have picked a great place to ask questions, these ladies are very helpful. Good Luck!
