Found out I have a cyst!

Hi Ladies!

I found out last week that I have a 10 cm cyst on my right ovary that I will be getting removed next week via laparotomy.  I just found this site, I didn't know there were different kinds of cysts.  I have no idea what kind mine is.

Last year I had the Essure procedure done.  Shortly after that I started to have really bad cramps during my period.  Each month got worse and worse.  I assumed it was a side effect of the Essure and tried to cope with it the best I could.  This spring the pain started to hang around all the time.  At the time it was controllable with tylenol.  I was busy this summer and kept putting off calling for a doctor appt.  I finally called in August but had to wait until the end of October to get in to see my Gyno.  I called because I realized the pain had gotten so bad that I couldn't even have sex with my husband anymore.  I went in and the Gyno sent me for an ultrasound.  She called me the next day to tell me I have a large cyst and she referred me to a specialist since she isn't a surgeon.  Well, I was almost floored when the specialist showed me how big my cyst is.  I assumed I was gaining weight in my stomach, not that some large alien had taken up residence!  I can't believe that something can grow so fast.

My surgeon said I will have to stay in the hospital 1-2 days and only be off work for 2-3 weeks.  I was a little surprised that I would be able to go back to work so quick.  I am really hoping to only have to be in the hospital for 1 day.  For those of you who had surgery, how long was your stay???  any tips on getting out of there?

I sat down and started thinking about my "symptoms" and realized that I have alot of issues.  The main one is the fact that I have to urinate all the time.  My family jokes that I am pregnant.  I am moody, crabby, tired, and my periods are agony.  I am distracted and having a hard time concentrating on things for the past few months.  I hope this all goes away after surgery.  I had to give up hiking and boating because of the bathroom issue.

I am so glad I found this forum.  I don't know anyone who has had a cyst and I am freaking out about it.

Hey There,
Try not to worry about the surgery. I know it is easier said than done, but we have all been through it and you too will have put this behind you shortly. I had a robotic hysto/bso/appy three weeks ago and Im doing really well. I was told to be out of work at least 4 weeks and then I could go back on restrictions. No lifting etc... Since I am a nurse in a busy recovery room, that is not an option. I am out for 6 weeks. Try and remember that 95% of all cysts are benign. I too worried about the aliens that were taking up residence in my body, hence the surgery. As far as the hospital wanting payment up front...WOW, I have never heard of that, but I suppose in this economy anything is possible.
Good luck and keep us posted.

I agree, I had never had to do this before.  They must have had a lot of bad customers!!  It just wasn't something I wanted to think about until after the surgery.

Good Grief !! That's terrible. I'm wondering how you can pay for "services" not yet "rendered"??????

Thanks.  The hospital called me today for all my pre-op stuff.  Then I get home to find a bill from the doctor already.  They require prepayment from me for my portion of the bill... argh!  Just one more thing to worry about.  If I don't pay, they don't do the surgery.  Guess I'll have to dust off the credit card.

Don't freak out !! Lots of ladies will be posting their experiences I'm sure. And quite a few , like Jaxsie, have had large ones as well. Try not to worry. I had the laparoscopy though and my experience isn't quite the same. But.. cysts are very very common ....

Good luck and keep us posted

Take care,
Sandy

Hi there,

firstly, sympathies on your situation and lets hope the op will resolve your symptoms and you can get back to normal.

My symptoms were/are the same as yours.

Op recovery varies depending on if you have a laparotomy or laprascopy (spellings?) the first is a little longer to recover as it is more invasive surgery. I had a laprascopy and felt OK ish after 3-4 days, but would not have wanted to return to work!! I was only able to go back to usual activies after 2-3 weeks. Oh- and my cyst was 10 cm when it came out- the doc showed me a pic form the inside where my ovary was the same size as my uterus! - really gross.

theres sopme great advice on one post- I will bump it up in case you haven;t seen it. The pain from the expanded diaphragm/gas was the worst I have felt in my life- I wanted to punch the doctor.

best wishes for your op and feeling better soon.
