Have a Cyst - but told it's not big enough to cause symptoms I am having

I am a 31 yo female and have had 1 pregnancy (one child). In February, I had to get a Colonoscopy due to blood in stool (minor) and strong family history. The result was clear. Since then, my period has become spotty and irregular and I have developed a menstrual cramp feeling on my right pelvic area. I've also been having a feeling of fullness, fequency urinating, bloating, etc.

Doctor did an ultrasound and found a small cyst on my right ovary (the kind that comes and goes with ovulation). Blood work ordered was normal aside from white blood cells in my urine, and my liver functioning test was just a little high (nothing major). I've had urinary tract infections before and I've had zero symptoms of a UTI - probably haven't had one in more than a year.

Doctor is not convinced that my cyst is large enough to cause the problems I am having. Therefore I had to get a CT scan, of which I am still waiting for results. Over the last week or so, my pain has become constant and my period this month was with heavy clotting (which is not normal for me) and then immediate spotting to nothing. Lasting a total of 4 or less days. Now, my pain is constant under my right rib cage and around towards my back.

What can I do to help this diagnosis move along and find some relief? Could it be just a cyst? It appears right now I am just in this limbo period of waiting for a result and, if my CT scan is normaly, what then??

Grrrr....all of your doctors are making me angry.  Cysts do cause GI disturbances, pain or pressure in the ribcage area, bloating, back/leg pain, fatigue, and a host of other complaints. I lived it. When my cyst was removed, my surgeon did a full exploratory of my other organs (liver, etc.) and they were all normal. The only culprit behind my symptoms was the cyst. It was over 10 cm, but I have read enough from other women to believe even much smaller cysts can do the same.

Another update...

Ultrasound done this week showed the cyst on the right side, no change in size, and a thick endometrium wall. BUT my timing was off, I think i am at the beginning of ovulation. Therefore, instead of going for surgery/biopsy "just in case" i am going to try timing an ultrasound with my period again, just to be sure the wall is thick.

Something else she discovered is that I am B12 deficient, which explains the lack of libido and tiredness.

So...another month for me, at least until a period shows up, and then another ultrasound.

You have every right to feel sorry for yourself it's very frustrating when they don't have the answers.  Let frustration turn to determination and keep seeking answers.  Maybe a second opinion might not be a bad idea. My latest gastro appointment figures it's due to adhesions from surgery back in 2002 and that my bowel is kinking off when I lay down at night.  Makes sense I guess but who knows

OB/GYN appt today. She also told me that my cysts aren't big enough to worry about. Now I have to be on progestrin for 10 days, go get another Ultrasound, and then see her again. Earliest I'll get closer to answers is probably mid-October. She seems stumped as to why I am having the symtoms i am having.

I was so frustrated that I had to sit in my car for a little while and feel sorry for myself. I know it could be much worse, but I am just at my wit's end. Husband wants me to see another OB-GYN but I am not sure if I can go through this whole process again with someone new.

Cysts seem to grow quite quickly sometimes.  Maybe a cyst broke just before your CT scan but hadn't during your ultrasound.  That happened to me during my CT scan it was there but then broke just a week after that during my ultrasound.  I must say it took 6 months for the hemorrhagic one to break.  I still feel sick and bloated and my left side is stiff feeling at times up into my ribs.  I don't get another ultrasound until the end of September but I'm thinking I am just getting more cysts because the nausea never goes away at night and the gassy intestines.  The gyno had suggested that he thought maybe it was endometriosis which I have never had complaints before this happened.  He suggested depo-lepron which is a needle given which puts you into menopause immediately and it lasts for 3 months.  I have to say I'm terrified to try it in case I turn into a complete mess from what I have read it doesn't sound nice.  I haven't tried it yet.  I wanted to wait until the end of September to see what the next ultra sound says.  Such a long wait sometimes it seems like it takes forever.  I don't know about my white blood count but I do know that blood was detected in my urine but never given anything for it and it isn't bothering me there but was last Christmas.  My CA125 marker was at 84 which I found very disturbing but the gyno didn't seemed bothered.  I had another one at the first of August and still haven't heard the results from that.  I phone leave a message but no one returns my call.  Seems we are all kinda on our own here so we keep trying to help each other out with info.  Hope this helps, keep fighting!!!

Still waiting for my gyn/specialist appoint and feeling miserable.

Also, my white blood counts are high...no symptoms of infection otherwise. I am on my second round of antibiotics. Anyone else experience this with Ovarian Cysts?

Got more info….

On antibiotics for a possible bladder infection…I have no bladder infection symptoms but my white count is slightly elevated, so I will play along and take the meds for a recheck of my urine in 10 days.

My ultrasound results are the following: “A small complex benign cyst in the right ovary measuring 1.2 x 1.1 x 1.0 cm. This lesion likely represent a hemorrhagic cyst.” There is no free fluid in the adnexa (8/12).

My CT Scan was normal but mentions the following: “There is fluid within endometrial cavity with likely tiny cysts in the bilateral adnexa including a 2.5 cm cluster of tiny cysts in the right adnexa, most likely physiologic in nature” (8/20).

I am feeling extremely bloated, full, and still have pelvic pain (hoping the meds take care of the pain in my upper right side). What do the differing results mean? Does it mean that in a week’s time I got more cysts, and the one on my right more than doubled in size? Also, why no fluid for my ultrasound but I do in my CT scan? If my cysts potentially doubled in size in a week's time, should I be concerned?

This is so frustrating...and I still don't have my gyno appt.

I too have had stomach upset during the night and pain under my left rib cage for 7 months now.  The hemorrhagic cyst I had was 5cm but did break at the first of August.  I still have the terrible nauseated stomach at night and the pain up my left side and no one seems to know why.  It is terribly upsetting when you go between a gyno and a gastro and no one has any answers.  I'm not so sure the hemorrhagic cyst has grown back.  They did tell me when the cyst broke that I had 4 other little simple cysts forming.  I have never had problems like this before and am 46 years old.  I truly feel this is all because of the cysts forming but the gyno says it's irritable bowel.  Keep fighting for the answers and hopefully you will succeed.  I'm going back to the gastro to see what he says.  Together maybe we can all help each other figure it out.

It is hard to tell what is going on.  The pain under your right rib cage could be related to your liver.  Usually, liver pain is more toward the front, but it can radiate around like you describe.  The menstrual symptoms could just be hormonal fluctuation or you could have a condition like endometriosis.   It is not likely that a small functional cyst would cause your symptoms, but cysts can grow and change over time.  If your CT is normal, you will need to discuss the next steps with your doctor.  Birth control pills are known to help regulate your cycle and may provide relief for your menstrual symptoms.  They also are commonly used to resolve simple cysts.  But, with the right sided pain under your rib cage, coupled with the abnormal liver function tests, I would be inclined to want to check out that further.  You may have two unrelated conditions that account for your symptoms.  If you haven't seen a gastroenterologist, that would also be possible follow-up plan.  I hope all resolves for you soon!

Take care,

Shelly
