How much bleeding is normal after laparoscopy -- complicated by period

I had spotting/light bleeding after my 28th June laparoscopy which then turned into my period which was due July 1st. It really came in on 3rd. July and I am bleeding still. I only go through about 2-3 pads/day, never have to change at night so it's not particulary heavy, about normal for my period. It just seems long due to the surgery. At what point do I become concerned?

This is a long time to bleed. You may want to check in with your doctor. A change of birth control pills may be all that is needed.

I had a Salpinectomy (removal of both tubes) I started spotting the day of my surgery and they still did my operation. I was taking birth control pills and that didn't even stop my normal period. I had my operation done 10/30 and I am still bleeding (like a normal period).

Welcome to the community. I am sorry you are still bleeding. Have you tried calling your doctor? He/she should be able to prescribe a progestin (hormonal) or tranexamic acid / Lysteda (non-hormonal). OTC NSAID's can also be helpful.

As far as the fibroid, there are less drastic treatments than hysterectomy. The uterus is important our whole lives. Its removal is associated with a number of long-term health issues including possible bladder and bowel prolapse and changes in function (without the uterus to separate them and keep them in place). Many women report a loss of libido and loss of sexual pleasure (especially if they had uterine orgasms). The uterine ligaments that must be cut to remove the uterus are the support structures for the pelvis. After hysterectomy, the spine compresses, the hips widen, and the rib cage falls resulting in the shortened, thickened midsection (no waist) and loss of curve in the lower back. And last but not least, hysterectomy oftentimes causes the ovaries to fail causing an earlier menopause and/or a surgical type menopause. The ovaries of intact women produce hormones into their 80's which are essential for good health.

I hope this helps! Let us know how you make out.

I had a lap 2 weeks ago and I was bleeding since April and he did mine. I also bleed for one day of the lap and started back up again 2 days later. I am still bleeding right now. It has been over 2 weeks since my lap. It was for the removal of my ovary and tube. I may have to get a full hysterectomy since there is a big fibroid attached to my uterus in the of a joystick. It did not show up on any of the ultrasounds or cat scans.

Welcome to the community. I am sorry you had to have so many surgeries to get a diagnosis. Who would have thought a large blood vessel would be the cause? Are they calling it Pelvic Congestion Syndrome?

As far as the bleeding, if it is still heavy and/or you are still passing large clots, you should call your surgeon to see if this is something that needs to be checked out or treated.

I hope it stops soon! Post back and let us know how you are doing.

I am 32 years old and recently had my 4th diagnostic laparoscopy on Friday 5/1/15, they did not find any endo but they did remove a cyst on my fallopian tube and they said I have a large blood vessel going around my uterus which is what has caused my pain for all these years. I had three laps done in the past and my dr at the time could not ever tell me what was wrong and why I was always in so much pain. He thought I had endo but was never able to confirm it so I was really glad I finally seen another dr and she finally figured out where my pain was coming from. Since the laparoscopy on Friday i have bled everyday. I started my period on Monday and I've noticed that it has gone from heavy to normal and now it's late Wednesday night and it's really heavy and clotty. I am starting to become concerned because i never really bleed that heavy before and when i took a shower tonight i had a rather big clot fall into the shower and I've been freaking out since. I did go back to work on Monday and have been pretty busy everyday this week, so i just wanted to know if this was normal at all or if maybe i am over working myself. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure that I can be of much help, but I had a laprascopy for endo in February.  I bled for about a week, then spotted on and off.  I then had a pretty heavy period that lasted about 8 days, then another one lasting about 5 days a week later. Honestly, I have had more days that I have bled than not since the surgery.  I think that the scope and breaking some of the endo loose probably causes the bleeding. Also, I am coming off of the Depo shot, so that may have something to do with it as well.  So...I think some bleeding is to be expected, however, if you have bled constantly for 3 months, I can't think this is normal.  I would probably keep bugging the doctor's office about it until they agree to see you.  If it is the birth control, maybe you need to switch methods.  That may be a way to get you an appointment.  Call and ask for an appointment to switch methods.  Then, at least, you can get in there and hopefully be heard.  Good luck!

Hi everyone,

I had my laparoscopy for endometriosis on January 7th and am still constantly bleeding. It's not heavy enough to justify a trip to the emergency room, but since it has been nearly 3 months I'm pretty concerned. I've called my OBGYN who assures me that this is somehow an issue with my birth control and is not from the surgery even though it never stopped after the surgery and I did not have this issue before the surgery. I am really frustrated and can't seem to find any information about what could be causing this. Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

I had my laparscopic surgery on December 19th.  On December 20th, I started my period and it hasn't stopped yet.  The doctor changed my birth control pills, but that didn't stop it.  Now, she put me on two months of estrogen. This is driving me crazy. I hate having a period for 5 to 7 days, but two months+ (still on it) is driving me INSANE! It doesn't help my husband and I's love life either.
Signed,

obviously this is late to comment but this is just in case anyone were to scroll down this now... but they can still do the surgery if you are on your period. I had my lap four days ago and with my luck I started my period the morning of my surgery. I let them know once I got to the hospital and they said that was totally fine. However, because the surgery messes around with your ovaries and such, your period does get messed up for the month. I bled heavily for the day of my surgery and the day after and then my period suddenly stopped. I thought to myself, "cool! 2 day period, im done!" but low and behold my period came back again today :( however I am a little nervous this time because though it is not as heavy, the blood is very very dark (almost black) and I have been VERY dizzy all day.

ps. my procedure was to remove severe endometriosis and multiple ovarian cysts on both ovaries.

Yes this is normal and will continue for a few days until your next regular cycle starts. You would be asked to take a liquid diet for atleast 3 days with 3 days total rest and not to lift heavy weights and no travelling long distances.

you're absolutely right. The doctors should tell us, what to expect. Guess they don't always have the time for it.

I had a laparoscopy for endometriosis three weeks ago and am feeling really good. I was in pain and feeling pretty ill for the first four days with sore shoulders, slight bleeding and painful stitches. My lower stitches are now completely gone, however my belly button stitches are still pretty sore and I think infected. I have also experienced diarrhea nearly every morning since my opp. Is this normal? I have not had a perion yet as im on the pill and have heard the first few are particularly painful.
I am 23... and worried about infertility and being able to fall pregnant due to the scaring of the endo. Any suggestions?

Thanks.
