Indigestion after Laparotomy

by steffie999, Oct 07, 2008 07:54AM
Can anyone tell me whether severe indigestion is normal following a laparotomy please?

I had my lap last Monday, so 8 days ago.  A 20cm mass (poss. dermoid, still waiting for lab results) was removed via a vertical cut.

Since then I can barely eat anything as I have constant severe and very painful indigestion.  My husband thinks its normal but I'm not so sure.

Thanks

Have you called your Dr?  I think indigestion is normal but it sonds like you are in a bit more than "normal" discomfort.  For me personally, my indigestion issues were due to the changes in my bowel movements. When I took Milk of Magnesia, I felt much better.
It sounds like it's time to call in a professional.........  Good luck and hope you are feeling better.

I totally agree with Justscore.  Are you able to move your bowels easily?  The aftereffects of surgery include awful gas.  You should try taking some Ovol or GasX and drinking some peppermint tea.  Walking will help to break up the gas and should give you some relief.

And I agree with both the above !! If the above doesn't give you relief though, you may want to give your Dr. a call. Hope you feel better,

i pray u some relief ... the indigestion i had preop was nothing compared to the tremendous increase post op .. i am on two indigestion meds (prescription strength) that will hopefully need to be reduced with time and dietary changes ... only ur doc can rule out other causes of the indigestion and also say if it is a safe amount so like the ladies above i vote for "call the doc"
good luck
love

Thanks all.  It seems a bit better today. I am seeing the doc tomorrow to have my stitches out so will ask her then.

Thanks again
