Is my cyst acting up on me?

Hi,
My name is Lisa. I am 35, married, no children. For the last four years I have had regular periods lasting for 3 or 4 days. In may 2009 I went to the Gyn and he found an ovarian cyst (3 cm) at my left ovary. The cyst looked normal and was filled with fluid. The Gyn told me to return in 6 months for a follow up app. On the 1st of december I started to get what I thought was my period, only brown spots for 4 days. On day 5 I started to bleed normally. Days 8 and 9 were very heavy bleading. On day 10 I went to the Gyn. He took a transvaginal ultrasound and told me that the cyst is now 2.2 cm. He gave me Methergine 0.125 mg 3 times a day to stop the bleeding. When I was taking the med I experienced a lot of backpain. The bleeding stopped on december 17th (finally) but I was still having the backpain. The most terrible days were december 18, 19, 22, 23  and 24. On christmas day the backpain stopped but I am now having pain at my lower left abdomen, left, lower back flank, pain in my upper thights (sp), pain in my buttocks, sometimes nausea, gas, stomach discomfort. I went to the ER doctor on the 26th. I explained my symptoms to the nurse. They took an urine test. They found blood in my urine. The doctor told me that it could be three things: 1) kidney stones 2)the ovarian cyst 3)back problems. She told me to go to my GP on Monday.

I never experienced this kind of pain before and it is limitating me from my daily activities. I am the whole time in bed!
Is it possible that my cyst (2.2 cm) is acting up on me? What can I do to control the pain?

I know my GP, he is going for the kidney stones first but I want him to send me to the Gyn first. What can I say to him to convince him to send me to the Gyn?

I life on a small island on the Carribbean and the rule here is that you have to go to the GP first so that he can send you to the specialist.

Any advice is appreciated.
Lisa

Update.

Hi to all.

I got a heavy period but not as heavy as in december, only for 6 days. The first three days were very heavy.
I went to my GP om 01-08-2010. The urine culture showed that I had red blood cells (microscopic), white blood cells, bacteria and protein in my urine. My GP stated that I have a kidney stone. He ordered an ultrasound of my kidneys. I went last Tuesday (01-12-2010) for the ultrasound. The radiologist told me that my left kidney has a congestion because it has something in it. He is 99.9% sure it is a kidney stone. I also did an X ray.
I have to go to my GP next week for the results. So ladies in the meantime I am going to post in the kidney disease and disorders forum.

On the other hand I have an appointment with my Gyn on 01-28-2010. I will than have more information of my left ovarian cyst.

I wish you all well.

Update

Hi to all and a happy and healthy 2010.

I went to my GP last monday (12-28-2009). After a pelvic exam he concluded that I may have kidney stones on the left side. I suggested to him that maybe the left ovarian cyst is hurting. He said to rule out the kidney stones issue first. So I had to collect urine for a culture and I will get my results tommorow(01-04-2010). He gave me antibiotics for a possible urinary tract infection and something for the pain (Buscopan).

I have to state that after taking the antibiotic and the pain med I am feeling a lot better. I only have this dull discomfort/ache at my left pelvic/abdominal area. All the other symptoms are gone.

On a less positive note. After 2 and a half weeks of getting that heavy menstrual bleeding I started to spot (brown) today, no bleeding yet. I made some calculations and it is possible that my period is arriving. I hope that this time I will not get a heavy one like last time.

Tommorow I will go to the GP again for the results of the urine test/culture. If it is not kidney stones I will ask him to sent met to the GYN. I want to have a closer look on the ovarian cyst.

It could be that the cyst ruptured.  If so, the fluid it contained has to be reabsorbed by the body. This process can take weeks.  Symptoms could be much like what you described.  I would definitely rule out gyn possibilities before thinking you have any other disorders.  There's not much to do, if my guess is correct, but to treat the symptoms and watch for any signs of infection (such as fever).  A heating pad might help with the pain.
