Left ovary removed due to 10cm cyst, now right ovary developed 4cm cyst

Hi. I'm 23 years old and I had left oophorectomy last Feb 2015 and was adviced to have a routine ob check up and transrectal ultrasound every 6 months. I came back to my ob august for the routine ultrasound and my doctor saw another 4cm cyst on my remaining ovary. She told me to wait and come back after 2 menstrual cycles.

Question: does anyone have same condition? Or do you know any reason or cause of this? Im worried and I don't have any child yet. Thanks!

I am sorry to hear about the cancer scare but glad you did not have cancer. I had a mucinous cystadenoma.

Some women tend to get cysts but I don't know why. I never had a problem with ovarian cysts except the one I developed at age 49. But they did see some cysts on my liver and kidneys when they did the CT scan but evidently they were not concerning.

My 10 cm cyst was at first diagnosed dermoid cyst but during operation was different from dermoid so the ob and oncologist did a salpingo-oophorectomy with partial omentectomy, pelvic lymph nodes dissection and peritoneal fluid sampling for biopsy instead since they suspected malignancy. But the result was benign- a serous papillary cystadenoma. I had regular menstruation cycles 1  month after the operation and no dysmenorhea. I'm not on birth controls. I'm just wondering why do I get recurring cyst. What are the possible causes? Thank you so much for the response!

Welcome to the community. I am sorry you had an ovary removed and now have a cyst on your remaining ovary. It is good they are just monitoring this cyst for now as most do resolve on their own in 2 to 3 cycles. And you certainly do not want to have your other ovary removed not only because of loss of fertility but also for the loss of hormonal production of the ovary. The ovaries produce hormones our WHOLE LIVES that protect us from many conditions such as heart disease, osteoporosis, hip fracture, dementia, memory impairment, mood disorders, poor sleep, vision changes, etc.

Did your doctor tell you what type of cyst it is? What type was the 10cm one? Are you on any type of birth control? That is helpful for some women in keeping cysts from forming or getting too large.

If this cyst continues to grow and has to be removed, do your health (and fertility) a BIG favor and seek out a surgeon who says he/she can remove just the cyst (cystectomy) and save your ovary or at least enough of it to regenerate and continue functioning normally. The removal of even one ovary can short-circuit the whole system. If your menstrual cycle has returned to normal then that hopefully means that your other ovary has taken over for the one that was removed.

Please keep us posted on future findings. Hoping that this cyst goes away!
