Thanks sugarmag!! Hope you are doing well!!
good luck i hope everything goes well and your recovery is a quick one.
listen to natalie she is a smart one.
My surgery was just over 4 weeks ago. I was 215 at time of surgery and am 5'5", so definitely have some excess body fat. I also had a laparotomy - verticle incision from about 1 inch above my naval to my pubic bone. I had no issues at all with the GA. I had no nausea after surgery, until I started on percoset.
Tips:
Make sure you have some lounge/pajama pants about 4 sizes larger than you wear now for your first week or so. Your abdomen will be swollen.
If you have belly fat, ask for a binder for when you are walking the next day. The belly fat, even if not a lot, will add extra pressure and pain when moving around. When they first put it on, it will be painful because they will roll you in the hospital bed. I cried, and I'm usually pretty good with pain. I used the binder for the 3 days in hospital plus another 4 days at home. Something they didn't tell me the first night-you can loosen your binder while laying in the hosp bed. You'll definitely want to as the first couple days will be difficult to take deep breaths.
Keeping your incision dry. If you have skin folds where your incision is, you'll need a little extra care to keep your incision dry. I've read some people have used in scented panty liners an folded them. I have been using folded gauze. I mostly need it while sitting up or standing. I try to lay on my back a few times a day with incision uncovered to help as well.
Take pain pills as directed the first several days at home. Don't wait for pain to take them. I was on them for 6 days then started to stretch them out.
Use stool softeners ad you increase your diet. You don't want to do any pushing! You will also be able to feel everything in your intestinal track for a couple weeks, maybe longer. Drink lots of water and juices to help also. I also used my hands to apply pressure to my lower abs during BM's for a good week or so yo help reduce discomfort.
For me, the second night once off the IV was the most difficult, but the progress after that was unbelievable. You'll be amazed how much better you feel every day!! Just don't let it get to your head and overdo it. Be prepared to sit around and relax at home. You'll need it.
I wish you the absolute best with your surgeries!!! I'm on here often and am happy to try to share advice and tips from my experience. Just want to pay it forward for all the wonderful support I've received from this forum! ;)
Take care and let us know how everything goes.
I have to have a 6 cm cyst removed and am worried about the same thing. I don't want them to over do the GA either. I am more scared of that then anything else!!!!
