I have just read several postings/comments on issue of ovarian cysts and just wanted to say thank you all of you ladies for sharing your experiences with all of us that have just started this crazy roller coaster ride. It helps to have some information from others that have already been there done that ;) So again thank you all. I pray that all of us will continue to heal quickly and with as little pain as possible.
Thank you for your tips! I just can't stand having a sore tummy from this ovary issue and from what I expect from the bowel prep. I realize this is so common and I am coming off as a baby, I just think I am a control freak and not being able to control what will happen is scary! I will read your stories and I thank you for your helpful tips!
I just had a laparotomy (it was supposed to be laparoscopy) this past Wednesday keeping my in the hospital one night and most of the next day. I ate solid foods until 11pm and drank clear liquids until 8:30am before my surgery which was at 11am. My surgery was on Wednesday and I had my first meal on Sunday. Don't skimp on foods now, you'll need the energy. Luckily I didn't have any vomiting but I did have nausea from trying to eat breakfast the next day. The worst pain is from the gas that they blow you up with. Pain meds regulate the incision pain but not the gas pain. It gets in your chest and shoulders making it painful to breathe. I found the most comfortable position to be sitting upright in the hospital bed. Also, I just had my first bowel movement on Sunday with the help of fleet. So, that tells you how slowed down everything gets from the pain meds.
I think I will also post my surgery story on my profile. You're welcome to check back and read that.
As for the pain and stress that you're experiencing before the surgery, I HIGHLY recommend acupuncture. I used it to manage the pain before surgery for 6 months, and I had a destress session before the surgery which greatly helped with getting sleep the night before.
Take care of yourself, and do something special just for you! Best wishes for your surgery and recovery!
Did they already tell you that you will have the bowel prep? I had it, but have found other ladies did not.
If they prescribe GoLYTELY, which is what I had, please ask the pharmacist to add a flavoring to it. Without flavor, it is horrid and it is difficult to get through the whole thing.
Don't stop eating solid foods before whatever date/time they tell you. You are going to need the strength from it because once you switch to a liquid diet, and then to nothing, your body is going into starvation mode. Certainly keep it on the light side (no steaks or pizza!) but eat solid for as long as you are permitted. I had a nice Chinese food dinner prior to my own ordeal.
Believe me, the laxative is going to work regardless of what you ate beforehand.
Share your fears about anesthesia with the anesthesiologist. You will meet the team prior to surgery. Mention the vomiting/nausea, too. I had anti-nausea adhesive disks attached to the back of each ear and had NO NAUSEA the entire experience, thanks to a great medical team that thought of everything.
The ab pain can be controlled by the pain meds, but not much can prevent the pain upon movement. You learn quickly to move SLOWLY and to press a pillow to the surgery site. Holding something soft and firm to the site greatly minimizes stress to the area, and that reduces pain.
Are they planning laparotomy or laparoscopy for you? If you have not already done so, you can read my laparotomy story in my profile and that might ease your fears somewhat. It helps to know what to expect and to know that this is a much more common experience than you might think.
Best Wishes!
