Ovarian Cyst that's 8 cm.

My 11 yr. old granddaughter was admitted into the hospital today. She's been experiencing severe abdominal pain, on a scale from 1-10 her's was a 10. She had ultrasound done and results show a very large fluid filled cyst in her left ovary, as well as one that burst in her right ovary. She was started on a IV with morphine. Unfortunately, the morphine didn't help with her pain. Therefore, another medicine was added. Her pain level now, is about a 3. Why at 11 yrs. old would she be having these cyst?

Thank you for your input, but she had to have surgery after being in pain for 4 days. The cyst in her ovary was 8cm. and twisted in her fallopian tube 4 times. She's now pain free and is doing well.

Even before the age of menses, young girls still ovulate but it is not as consistent as later teenage years.  Cysts can start growing at a young age due to this.  Every time a girl or women ovulate a cyst is formed but usually disappears.
