Ovarian Dermoid Cyst

Hi guys,
I found that I have a ovarian dermoid cyst in my left ovary about 8cms big. I was just wondering if whether laproscopic or laparotomy surgery method is better for removing the cyst/having a better chance of preserving the ovary.

I have been to two gynaecologist specialist and have been told two different opinions and now I feel abit stressed. One specialist told me that he wishes to operate through laparoscopic surgery to remove the cyst as there is no need to cut my open and can be done through keyhole, the other specialist stating that laparotomy would be the better option as it has a higher chance of preserving/saving my ovary keeping it intact and stated that by doing it through laparoscopic surgery it will have lower chances of being able to save the ovary, also stating that laparotomy would have a 50% higher chance of success. Is this true? Would laparotomy give the surgeon a better working space to carefully remove the dermoid rather than doing it through a camera?

I understand that every specialist has their own method of operating and what they are specialised in but now I feel confused and stressed as to which method of surgery would be best. So I wanted to come and ask if anyone has experienced either surgery or has any advice, or information on this it would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi!

Thank you for the reply! Oh wow 5-6inches sounds quite big.. But no I have been told by both of my specialist that if a dermoid cyst was larger than 10cms its best to get laparotomy to remove it.

I am paying for this surgery out of my own pocket sadly I don't have any insurance. It was either pay for it or have a training specialist operate on me which I found to be abit too scary.. May I ask how is your scar going? Because the only reason stopping me from doing the laparotomy is the scar that I will have :(

I had a 10x11 cm dermoid cyst and my ovary was kept.  I had an incision just a little above my pubic bone that goes about 5-6 inches horizontally.  I couldn't tell you if the procedure was chosen for that likelihood (I did express my concern for fertility) or because of the cyst's size or just because the surgeon preferred it/it got the hospital more money from my insurance.
