Ovarian cysts

My wife (Tracie) is a 41 year young woman and a 2 year breast cancer survivor, who had a stage 1 infiltrating lobular carcinoma (no lymph nodes affected). She had a lumpectomy, radiation and 4 sessions of chemotherapy, even though it was a controversy whether it was necessary to have the chemo or not since her oncotype DX test came back showing a low reoccurence rate of 9%, but being only 39 years of age at the time with 2 young and beautiful kids, we opted to be aggressive.
Tracie is a healthy 5'8 tall and weighs 155lb and is a pilates trainer. She eats a good diet (on most days). She has faught to survive and intends to keep doing so (and so do I and the kids). My concern is that she recently had a very sharp pain in her lower abdomen which lasted over an hour, and when she was examined by her OBGYN a couple of days later, she requested Tracie to have an ultrasound because she felt some cysts. The ultrasound showed 2 regular fluid filled cysts and 1 solid(complex as she called it) cyst that had ruptured that was full of blood. Her OBGYN, was initially concerned, but then told us it could be from her cycle but would prefer to wait and give her another ultrasound in 6 weeks so see if things were changed or not. She said she wanted Tracie to consider the surgical removal of the cyst and probably the ovary because of her previous breast cancer history which also scares us a lot
Now we have to wait 6 weeks and Tracie and I are worried and scared. I am wondering if we should be alarmed and if the blood filled ruptured cyst means ovarian cancer, and whether because it ruptured the blood would have affected other areas with cancer cells.
Im truly so sorry for the lengthy message but I wanted to give you enough info on Tracie and I couldn't do it shorter.
Thank you so so much and I shall anxiously wait for your reply.
Charly

I also believe that the doctor would take action immediately if he felt there was the possibility of cancer especially given Tracie's history. I can only imagine how frightened you both must be because of what Tracie has already been through.  Perhaps you can call the doctor and he can speed the process along instead of doing the wait and see or answer some of the questions you have. Maybe he is not aware of how scared you both are and that you need some answers now. It certainly can't hurt to try!  Please keep posting and let us know how things go....I am sure Tracie will be fine!

Tracie certainly doesn't need this worry after what she has been through.  If the doctor thought that she had cancer he would have dealt with the burst cyst in a more speedy manner.  Over 95% of all cysts are benign.  Do take a look at the health pages (top right) for more info on types of cysts, etc.   I'm sure all will work out for her.
