Possible ovarian cyst

Hi,

Ive been having some symptoms that I suspect might be caused by an Ovarian cyst: tenderness, slight one-sided swelling, very dull pain, and periodic sharp pain (radiates from abdomen to hip every now and then) and all this occurs in an area I "suspect" is where my left ovary is located.  These symptoms occured earlier in the year for about 3-5 days about a week before my period would start.  This happened for 3 months and then it stopped.  Its now happening again (started last month and in the same area) but now the symptoms are lasting for about 10 days.

My questions (sorry if these sound silly) are:
-would it be best to see my OBGYN about this or a regular doctor?  I dont actually know that this is even the ovary that is giving me symptoms but I feel that is the best doctor to see if it is, in fact, a cyst.

-how urgent is it that I see a doctor?  Not sure how common these types of symptoms are and I dont have any severe pain (unless my 17 month old daughter stands/falls on the area!) more just a nuisance factor right now.

thanks,

Carissa.

Anytime.  Cysts never hurt all the time unless there's an underlying emergency such as twisting.  Many never hurt at all.

thanks!  That makes sense.  I will keep you guys updated.

Any reason to think that I should make the appointment when I have the symptoms or should anytime be ok?

Hi..it could be several things going on...one would be if you do have a cyst it may not have gone away from months before..(sometimes they can hang around a while) or..since its happening every few months it could be your left ovary is ovulating. (one month our right ovary ovulates, then the next month your left ovary ovulates)..i would see your gyno..take care and let us know what he/she tells you!

Thanks for the reply - thats along the same lines as I was thinking so I will go straight to the OBGYN.  We are thinking about trying for a 2nd child sometime next year so I will get this looked that soon and make sure there isnt anything that could be a problem if I were to get pregnant (or if there is something that requires treatment, get that taken care of before ttc).

Only thing that baffles me is that symptoms stopped for several months and then started up again.  Is that a common occurrence with a cyst?

Thanks again for your help.

I would say start with a gynecologist since regular doctors tend to run a whole bunch of unnecessary tests...then send you to a gynecologist!  The gyn tests are much easier to tolerate (pelvic exam and ultrasound if something like a cyst is felt).  If nothing else, it may shed some light on why you get those symptoms.  Nobody knows if a cyst is to blame until a cyst is actually found.  But it sure sounds like a cyst.
