Post-Laproscopy

I had surgery yesterday(Sunday). Saturday night I had terrible lower left abdomen pain that I thought was some sort of menstrual cramp. I knew they were painful but had been lucky and never really had any and thought it was strange to have them 2 weeks off. After 3 hours of screaming, almost breaking my boyfriend's fingers, and having my boyfriend barely keeping me out of a panic attack I had given up the energy to fight the pain and knew I had to get to the ER asap. I checked in about 9:30 pm and I didn't care about anything but getting meds in me. The moment we got to the room the gentleman who brought me there said I would need to put on a gown and I took the dress I had thrown on off before they even closed the curtain! I didn't care one bit. I had actually been to that same ER at 2 am Friday morning because of another ongoing health issue. This ended up being a good thing because I had the same nurses and going through all the health history and registration isn't easy when you are screaming in pain. After a round of morphine and two rounds of dilaudid with 2 bags of fluid I was in a state where we could actually get somewhere. They ruled out a kidney stone and decided to do an ultrasound internal and external. I was not liking some of the faces the attendant was giving while she was doing the ultrasound. She said she was having a hard time finding my left ovary which didn't make me feel too good. It wasn't long before a gynecologist came to my room and explained I had a cyst on my left ovary that was causing torsion and that they would have to operate right then in order to save my ovary. They said it would be an hour procedure and mu boyfriend in the waiting room was quite worried when it started going on almost 3 hours. Once they were inside they found a 5 inch cyst on my left ovary as well as an additional 3-4 inch cyst on my left and right ovaries. They removed all three and thankfully didn't have to remove anything else.

I have read some posts here and the 10 things about after laproscopic surgery was very helpful. I was given percocet as my pain medicine as well as prescription strength motrin. I was wondering how long most people stayed using the stronger pain pills on average. They said I can't go back to work while still on them. They also said that I could shower today since they put glue stuff over the dissolving stitches and no gauze or anything. Is this right? Is there anything to be careful of when showering? Also is it better to sit or lay when resting or just whatever is more comfortable? I had 0 time to plan for this so getting everything taken care of is a little overwhelming.

Thanks for any advice you can give,

Ellen

See the fun thing for me is that I am away at college and do not have a doctor in the area and hadn't gotten one since there aren't any close that are in our insurance network. I got an apartment for the summer because when I go home my headache is so bad I can't function. That's why I'm glad to have found this forum. I think you are probably right in that it is just everything healing, thank you.

I found that if I layed down flat, it was painful.  I had to prop up my feet or head to relieve it.  I think the random twinges of pain are probably your nerves and muscles healing.  There's alot more to the healing process than we realize.  If you feel there's something wrong it never hurts to give your dr a call.

Even while laying down in addition to just feeling sore I occasionally get random pains that are sharper than the general soreness.  I'm guessing this is normal since surgery is traumatic to the surrounding muscles as well as incision site?

I think I only needed strong pain killers for less than a week, but I didn't feel healed for almost a month.  My dr said not to lift anything over 20-30 lbs for 6 weeks.  I usually felt a pulling sensation if I was overdoing it, but when I was on the stronger meds.  I didn't know I overdid it until the meds wore off so be careful and take of yourself.
