Second Opinion?

I am a very active and healthy 26 year old mother of 2.  I recently went to my female dr because I missed a period and was not feeling well.  I have been having sharp pains in my lower abdomen for several months just before and after my period.  I had a pap done and it was abnormal, so proceeded with a colposcopy that showed a mild cervical dysplasia.  Dr said it's not anything to be alarmed about just have a pap every 4 months to check on it.  So when it came time for my next period I the pain was more intense. I went back and she said she would do a pelvic ultrasound to make sure everything was healthy.  The ultrasound tech didn't say much during the procedure, only that they would call me with the results.  The thing is, I noticed while she was measuring my ovaries that the right one was double the size of the right and she spent a long time looking at it and trying to measure it.  I didn't ask questions, which I probably should have but I figured they would explain it all to me when they called or had me come back in.  My problem is that when they called all the nurse said was that Dr looked at the ultrasound and said it looked normal. ?????  I know I'm not crazy and I know what I read and saw............my question for you is should I go for a second opinion????   If I wasn't in pain every month I wouldn't be so concerned but it gets to the point that I cannot sleep on my stomach because it's sore.  Any thoughts????

Thanks!!!

Not much I can add to the above , but I so agree with "Cirella".. I think the dysplasia is something that should def. be addressed more fully. Have you checked in with "Womens Health Pages"? Might be more on there .

Regarding the cyst, you may want to take a look at the top right of this page "Health Pages" . good information re: cysts.

Take care and keep in touch

Hi,
I totally understand about coming across as "wanting" something to be wrong.  The positive side to that is that you are doing something proactive for yourself and wouldn't you want to know now rather than it being too late?  It's your body and you ask whatever you want.  If you doctor makes you feel silly then confront them with a "why are you not taking me seriously?".  If you don't like the answer...go elsewhere.  You employ your doctor not the other way around.

Dysplasia is nothing to take lightly.  Mild dysplasia is an abnormality of cells that are confined to the surface.  Left untreated, they can multiply and go invasive.  If you are comfortable waiting the 4 months for another check then do that.  At that time, if the abnormalities are still there or worsened then a form of treatment should be discussed.  If there are no abnormalities, then good.  Sometimes the lab gets it wrong.

I know about feeling comfortable with your doctor.  That's OK.  But, I wouldn't let her poo-poo your concerns.

Thanks for your reply.....

I will definitely call and talk to the dr more about my results and my concern.  I didn't get to actually see her when i had the ultrasound done or I would have then.  More than anything I don't want to come across as if I want something to be wrong. Make sense??

I was and still am very concerned about the dysplasia but she made it seem like it really wasn't a big deal so I didn't want to make a big deal if she wasn't.  My fiance seems to think that maybe I need to switch dr's.  Her practice is very busy and she has a very large facility with several drs.  Twice now I have gone and not actually gotten to see her but her PA instead.  I hate to have to switch because she delivered my first two children.  We are planning on getting pregnant in the next year and I don't think he feels comfy that she gives enough personal attention to her patients. Any thoughts???

Thanks again!

Hi, It could be that your ovary had a follicular cyst which is normal.  Each month during our cycles we get them and they go away on their own.  Sometimes they burst, causing pain.  If you would like more answers about the VUS you can call the doctor and discuss the results with him/her.  You could ask your questions at that time.  I would also call the office and request a copy of test results should you decide to go to another doctor.

I would be more concerned with the mild dysplasia.  Keep on that, please.

There is a ovarian cyst forum where more of your ovarian questions may be answered.  If you scroll down you'll see the link.

Good luck to you.
