Surgery last Dec. Now I have 5 cysts that came BACK, what's next?

I finally went back to the doc yesterday and confirmed my suspicions that my cysts came back, but I never expected 5 of them!  I have a small one on the right, 3cm, then 4 of them on the left, one that is about 5cm and (at least) three that are much smaller, less than 2cm.  Doc said she wants me to take OrthoTriCyclen to see if that will help, which is supposedly a high dose BC pill.  I really do NOT want to do that, I have a non-hormonal IUD so I wouldn't have to take the pill :(

I had surgery back in Dec, but the doc then (different doc, he was temp, the one I saw yesterday is there new permanent one).  He only drained the cysts (one on each side, left was worse like it is now).  The doc yesterday said she'd never had done that, she would have removed the cyst wall.  I'm not in as much pain as I was before so she wants me to come back in 3 mo and measure me again.  I told her I'd be back sooner if the pain got bad, and I have vicodin if I need it.

I was told I had PCOS before, but it was never bad, never had any problems with my cycle, only symptoms were cosmetic (hair, a little weight, etc).  When I spoke to the doc about this yesterday she said, "*who* told you that", and I told her I did the glucose test years ago and she said that wasn't enough and I'd probably be sent to endocrinologist.

I asked her if there was anything else I could do other than the BC pills and she said no.  Has anybody else been able to manage their cysts without BC pills?  What options do I have?

To start with it might make it worse. Its tough to say. I dont know, I take BCP three months consecutively, and I have actually had the cyst that was there, go away and had stayed away from the time we started BCP 3 months, til surgery time.

I'm not sure if its very common, some women can keep their ovary(ies) no problem. For me, my OB/GYN thinks that maybe it was also just a bad ovary, so it couldnt handle it. My first cyst was 7cm.. .second time around it was only 5cm, and it caused my ovary to collapse. I guess it also depends on where the cyst grows. Mine were IN the ovary, in the "meat" of it.

No, if you miss a pill or two it shouldnt negate the months worth. If you miss 3 consecutively however, you would have to dispose of that pack, and start all over with a new pack i believe it is.

Is losing an ovary common with recurring cysts?  I've seen your comment from few people that they get it removed, it comes back, ovary wall is messed up and they lose one.

I've also read that the cysts won't shrink from the BCP, just that there won't be more formed.  I've been taking an herbal supplement called Lunazon.  IMO it seems to be keeping my cycles on schedule and keep me from getting too hormonal, but it's not affecting the actual cysts.

I'm REALLY bad at taking pills, which is why I have an IUD.  What will happen if I miss a pill or a few?  Will it negate the entire month's worth?  I'll google that, but I'm sure most of the info I'll find will be about preventing pregnancy, not preventing cysts.  I do NOT want to take them at all, which doesn't help my need at all.  There is a part of me that knows I could end up feeling better, but my hormone issues are making me nauseous now, what will the BCP do to my nausea?  Make it worse?

I'm sorry to hear the cysts have returned!

I have, I have been on Yasmin 21 day pills for 3 months consecutively, then let myself have a period, and that has kept my cyst on L ovary from forming.

I had the same thing, first surgery, I had cysts drained, within a month they came back. For my L ovary, it responded to this treatment, for my R however, it only stopped it from growing more than it already had, and I had to go for another surgery, and in the end had to lose the ovary because the cyst had caused the ovary to collapse( the ovarian wall was less than 1mm thick)... I really hope that the birth control helps you so you dont need another surgery.

I know its frustrating dealing with cysts, and just would love for it to be over with and not deal with them anymore. I know you dont want to have the BCP and deal with the hormones, but honestly, it can work and stop the cysts from returning and the hormones can cause it to shrink and go away.

Good luck!
