UPDATE on surgery! Getting close!

I went for pre-op yesterday with my dr. My surgery is still scheduled for Tuesday..oy vay! And you girls were right! Recovery is 1-4 weeks...but he won't clear me until the 2nd week. I go back on my boyfriend's birthday to get cleared for work hopefully. Man, what did you do while at home? I am going to be bored as you know what! I also may be in the hospital 2 nights instead of one...Which I don't like the idea of, but hey whatever has to be done right?

I made sure to ask why he was doing a laparotomy and not a laprascopy to remove my dermoid. He said that since we don't know exactly what will be in there he wants to be extra cautious and remove the cyst from the outside. He said there could be oils and sweat in there and if it spills into your abdomen you could get whats called peritonius, which you may have heard of. If not, it is "an inflammation of the peritoneum, the thin membrane that lines the abdominal wall and covers most of the organs of the body. There are two major types of peritonitis. Primary peritonitis is caused by the spread of an infection from the blood and lymph nodes to the peritoneum. This type of peritonitis is rare -- less than 1 % of all cases of peritonitis are primary. The more common type of peritonitis, called secondary peritonitis, is caused by the entry of bacteria or enzymes into the peritoneum from the gastrointestinal or biliary tract. Both cases of peritonitis are very serious and can be life-threatening if not treated properly." Mine would be secondary..but its nasty stuff. He said that since my dermoid has grown in and out of the ovary..he will have to do some special cutting and if it breaks open...he doesn't want to risk doing that on the inside of me..which I fully understand now.

I feel better about the surgery now...all should go well. I know what to expect for the most part! Thanks ladies for all of the encouragement!

I already started on it because I was bored lol and its addicting! I still need to sit down and talk about what else I want and need for the next couple of weeks. I need to make a list of movies to rent from blockbuster so my mom can go on wednesday and pick them out. I'm getting nervous, but at the same time I want to get it over with ya know? I am looking forward to not having to work for a couple weeks though! But then again...yeah

Thanks for the post the reason your Dr is going for the Laporotomy.  It was informative for me as I am looking into the options for surgery now and will pass on that question to my Dr.

You will find ways to pass the free time.  I took a crochet lesson and am going to make a baby blanket (I'm pregnant)  Also the jewelry idea is great.  Going through old magazines and tearing out images to create a vision board is another fun, low maint. project.

I also read in another post to get a "gopher"  They are those grabby things for older folks who can't bend so well.  After surgery we won't bend so well for a few weeks either!

I wishing you luck and ease during these next few weeks!

I just wanted to wish you the best of luck on Tuesday. Try to enjoy your time off! Trudie is right....you will be tired, even at your young age. Take this weekend to get together the supplies to make your two weeks more enjoyable. Do you enjoy any hobbies that aren't strenuous? Or, maybe, take up a hobby like beading. You could make something for all the people who help you out during your recovery. Speaking of which, take up people on their offers to cook, clean, do laundry, or anything else! It is all invaluable!!!!!!!! Good luck, hon.

Hugs,
Shari

Thanks Trudie!

I went to Target last night a got a bunch of loose fitting, stretchy clothes. Now i just need to pick up a bunch of movies and maybe get a book. I have a couple sitting around. I should get some magazines too..

The dr says that I should only be in the hospital for 1 night, but if I can't keep food cown, urinate regularly, my wound doesn't look very good, or my lungs aren't clear they will keep me for another night...I am praying that I get to go home the morning after though. I don't wanna stay in the hospital!

Glad you are feeling better about things.  I was in the hospital 5 days with mine.  If you can stay off the full 4 weeks please do.  You will feel much better.  When you are off you will be amazed how the time flies.  In the first couple of weeks you will be so tired a lot of the time will be spent sleeping.  Do go for walks and arrange to rent all your favourite movies and get your book list purchased ahead of time.
Take care, Trudie
