Was your complex ovarian cyst benign?

I'm 28 years old and going to see a GYN specialist tomorrow. A couple of weeks ago a a fluid filled cyst containing 5cm of dense material was found on my left ovary during an internal ultrasound. I haven't been well for a couple of months and after an examination my GP sent me for the ultrasound right away. I've been asked twice "how far along I am" this week as I look a good 6-7 months pregnant due to the bloating, my GP has assured me that bloating like this is common with cysts.

My question is, was your ovarian cyst like this? (as in contained a fair bit of dense/solid material and caused nasty symptoms, particularly a distended abdomen)? and of course, was it benign?

My GP believes the specialist at the hospital will want to run more tests and remove the cyst. Guess I'll find out tomorrow. Any advice would be appreciated. I know that 99% of cysts are benign but frankly, I'm not interested in statistics - I'm interested in personal experience with this.

Thanks in advance :)

Hi :) Thanks for your reply. Is it normal for the fluid part of cysts to go down on it's own while the solid/dense parts remain (or grow) that you know of? All the info on the internet is confusing LOL.

My GP did order blood tests including the CA 125 several weeks ago - I have since learned that many, many women with Ovarian Cancer have normal readings and that just as many women record high CA 125 results when they, in fact, do not have cancer. So while my reading was in the "normal" range, I'm not placing too much hope in that test itself. White cells were high, platelets were high and Lymphs were high.

I am losing weight at the moment too, was quite shocked to see my weight at the hospital yesterday as I thought that my pregnant looking belly would of resulted in a gain.

My mother is (naturally) quite distressed about all of this and has given me the name of a private gyn who bulk bills. She wants me to make an appointment right away. I've decided to just wait the next 3 weeks out and then go from there. Depending on the ultrasound results and what the doctor (at the hospital) says, I may give this other doctor a call. I don't believe for one second that the cyst will have disappeared or shrunk, on the contrary I believe it's grown, just need to wait for the ultrasound to back that up unfortunately.

Sorry to hear you are in such pain . Can your regular Doctor refer you to another GYN for a second opinion ?  Make it crystal clear you do have family history of cancer ,and are concerned about it . I had two appointments set with GYN's ,but went with the first Doctor because I felt comfortable with him .

My symptoms began getting better after my period ,but I could still feel the mass . I think the fluid part of the cyst had gone down some before surgery . I felt like crap for over a month and had begun losing weight even though my stomach was still distended .

Did your Doctor order any of the blood tests i mentioned before ?  Because you are young I am sure he is taking it slow to see if it resolves on it's own ,but you have to feel confident in that method. Get another opinion if you think that would ease your mind .

Good luck

Went for appointment and it went how I expected it to. Had some swabs and a pap smear and need to go for another ultrasound in a couple of weeks so they can see if the cyst has grown or possibly gone away. Then I'll see the doctor at the hospital a week after that.

Not really feeling too confident with the doctor I saw to be honest. Apart from barely being able to understand him :-/ he didn't seem too concerned about the distended abdomen (he says while it's very distended, it may not be due to the cyst) and he also didn't seem concerned at all about how painful that pap smear was...I'm still in pain now.

Hopefully the next 3 weeks will fly by.

Thanks ladies :) I appreciate your advice and reassurance more than you know!

nyc lady - Did they find the malignant cyst at the same time they found the benign cyst? I am sorry you went through that :( What stage was it?

I'm from a big family and more women in my family have battled (and died) from Cancer than those who haven't. My mother beat Stage III Cervical Cancer 17 years ago and she's still fit, healthy and very happy :) I think my family history and how sick I look at the moment is what's scaring me into thinking the worst.

It's definitely not fibroids according to the ultrasound report - I could be wrong but I genuinely doubt Endo or PCOS (my GP agrees about Endo not being likely) and of course then there's the possibility of Ovarian Cancer which I hope to God I don't have, but feel I probably do. Just hope I'm wrong. Will let you know how this afternoon goes.

Yes  I was diagnosed with an 8cm complex cyst with multiple septations . Ultra sound showed partial solid /part fluid cyst . Scary because ultra sound said could not rule out malignancy ...Yet I just had it removed last week and all was benign ! So anxious before hand .   My symptoms were abdominal pain /discomfort ,bloating ,lack of appetite .

Be prepared the Doctor may want you to have a CA125 test and or an OVA1 blood test . These are used as indicators for possible cancer ,but they are NOT clear evidence that there is cancer .

I am 50 so they were more concerned of cancer even though I am still having periods .

I had open abdominal surgery to remove the mass ,ovary, and tube on the left side . Everything went great and I went home the next afternoon after surgery . They did a frozen section during surgery with outcome of benign. Full pathology report came today confirming . I feel really good even though I have to take it easy the next few weeks .

Please try to stay positive ,I know how hard that is to do ,but you will be fine .

Yes, I have had complex cysts that were benign, and one that was malignant.

I know how scary this all seems, I was in my 30s when I went through it.  And the doctor is right, all the symptoms, including the bloating could be caused by a benign cyst.

Please let us know what happens at the doctor.

Hold on to the fact that most cysts are benign...try hard not to waste a good panic...if by some chance it does come back malignant, we will help you get through it, I promise.

Best of luck.
