Weight gain right after laparoscopy to remove dermoid cyst

Hi,

I just had laparoscopy done on Tuesday to remove a dermoid cyst measuring 7.5 x 6.2 x 4.9cm. I am still feeling sore and bloated. However, I noticed that my weight has gone up by 2.6kg (5.7lbs) right after the operation. I measured my weight the morning of my operation and the morning after my operation. The weight still isn't going off. Will the weight go off? I haven't had much appetite, and haven't eaten a whole lot. So, it has been strange to see such a large weight gain right after an operation. Anyone had such experience? Thanks :)

If you were pregnant, you would not be gaining weight or bloating up so fast. Since you are "bloated" all over this would tend to indicate water / fluid retention. A call to your doctor may be a good idea.

hello, thank you so much for taking the time to reply me. I genuinely appreciate it. It made me feel a little more comforted at least. May i ask how can i tell if it is a swelling on my womb, or is it just plain bloated, or fat? I'm honestly rather terrified that the doctor didn't check for the pregnancy cause he was only there in the operating theatre where i met him in there.

Also, I've been having quite a bit of phlegm on my chest area and throat after the surgery. I'm 6 days out and i'm still experiencing this. Does anyone experience this as well?

Welcome to the community. They usually do a pregnancy test before surgery so it is doubtful you are pregnant. Since it has only been 5 days since surgery, my suspicion is that the weight gain is more likely to be water retention and/or the gas (carbon dioxide) remaining from the surgery. If you have other symptoms such as urine retention (not emptying your bladder), excessive pain, fever, etc. please see your doctor.

Hi, i'm just feeling rather depressed and i hope somebody can enlighten me.

I just did an ovarian cyst surgery on my left ovaries and for some reason, i keep gaining weight ever since then. It has been 5 days already, and i'm still feeling so fat on my arms, stomach and face. I thought the surgery would only cause swelling on the womb area, but i have gained weight overall. I haven't been eating more than normal but i'm really putting on a lot of weight.

Also, i'm rather concerned cause I'm not sure if i was pregnant before the surgery. Is that why i gained weight too? If i was pregnant before the surgery, would it cause a miscarriage for the baby? cause there are no signs besides weight gain before and after the surgery. so i'm not sure if i'm not pregnant to begin with, or i'm just plain fat and gaining on weight… i would really appreciate a kind soul's advise. i'm struggling with body image problems right now

What was the purpose of your laparoscopic surgery? Did the surgeon remove your uterus and/or ovary or ovaries?

I had a laparoscopy over 15 years ago. Immediately after surgery I had packed on a good 20 lbs and it took me a long time to get back down. I have been body building for the last 2 years and it's helped me lose all of the weight. However, my stomach is still bloated no matter what I do! I eat very clean and workout about 4-6 times a week! My entire body has completely transformed except my abdomen. It is beyond frustrating. Is this normal?

I had a cyst removed on the 12th of December and have gained nearly 5 kg its is so frustrating i run or walk 4 to 6ks every day, i don't drink alcohol and i eat well and don't have big meals. Will the weight shift? some people have told me it can take 3 to 6 months before i will go back to normal.
Am i doing to much and is this the cause of the bloating and swelling.

Hi,

I have an operation pending this month. I'm having two ovarian cysts removed. I already have a swollen stomach and can't shift the weight.

However, when i read that this will increase after the operation I nearly had a heartattack and started to panic, but fungirl put me at ease.

I still have my pre-op consultation to attend so i will go armed with lots of questions.

Thank you guys.

Thank you very much, fingirl1011.  This forum is great!  I was less worried after joining this forum last week and I'm happy to report today that the bloating disappeared on the 9th day after the surgery.   Thank you & Merry Christmas!!

It is normal for your weight to go up right after surgery.  When you have surgery, the fill your abdomen with air so that they can get a better view of what is going on, plus your body has gone through some trauma so there will be swelling.  Give yourself a couple of months to heal.

aval, you may have bleeding because when a cyst or fibroid is removed, it can mess with your hormones and take a few months for your body to work stuff out.  Give yourself time to heal.

I had a laparoscopy surgery to take away the fibroids in my uterus 8 days ago.  I now have two problems (1) significant weight gain and swollen body; and (2) menstruation right after the surgery.  I eat normal and have no problem in defecation every morning.  I asked the doctor about the weight gain and swollen body, he said I have eaten too much -- which is not true.  I also don't understand why I have menstruation after the surgery and I was told that it can last for a month.  Both are very frustrating to me.  Would you please shed some lights on these ... are these normal, anything I can do to get these over?

Hi!

I sure hope so. I don't feel as bloated as right after the op now that it's 5 days after. However, if I look into the mirror, it still looks bloated. And, my weight hasn't gone down yet. :( It's a little depressing as I took a while to lose the weight. My bowel movements are fairly regular. Hoping that the weight goes down in the next two weeks and that there are no infections!

It must be the post-op bloat. It should decrease in the next week or two.  Are you having regular with bowel movements?  Some women get badly constipated after this surgery and that could contribute to the weight gain.
