What to look for after one ovary has been removed?

4 days ago I had my right ovary removed via laparospic. Originally my dr was suppose to remove only a cyst and a mass but I guess during surger, she decided it was best to take the whole ovary. I'm a little scared as I'm only 24 years of age, with no children. Will my hormones remain normal or will they be all over the place? Will I experience weight gain or weight loss. Is there a big chance of the mass being malignant as she said she sent it in for testing? If anyone has experienced this, please share with me as I am becoming depressed and just need someone who has been where I currently am.

Welcome to the community. I am sorry to hear your ovary could not be saved! It seems that the remaining ovary is usually enough to get pregnant but I certainly understand your concern about cysts developing on that ovary. Hopefully, if that happens, you can catch it before it causes torsion and kills off the ovary. You would also want a surgeon who does a lot of cystectomies so that he/she can save as much ovarian tissue as possible.

We really need our ovaries our whole lives because they continue producing hormones LONG after menopause. Mine were unnecessarily removed at age 49 (as was my uterus) and the effects have been way worse than I ever could have imagined.

I hope your recovery goes well and you suffer no ill effects!

I am 28 yrs old. I just had a 10cm cyst and my right ovary removed about a week ago. I have been on BC for 4 years prior. The cyst was discovered at 4cm. The doctors wanted to watch the cyst in hopes it would shrink and go away on its own. I was scheduled for my final, surgery deciding cyst that Friday but I only made it until Thursday morning. I woke up at 4am with excoriating pain. I had experienced this pain intermittently since the cyst was found, diagnosing my pain. I was waiting it out when hours passed and it had not subsided. I started vomiting and decided I should call the doctor.I was seen for an ultrasound as soon as I got there. It hurt so bad. It hurt to walk. It hurt to do anything. They put me in for a direct admit to the hospital. I went for exploratory laparoscopic surgery. They found the cyst had grown to 10cm and twisted 4 times around my ovary. At that point they couldn't save my ovary and had to take it out with the cyst. Ovary torsion is the medical term of when your cyst cuts off the blood flow to your ovary.I am sleepy, sore, have had some bathroom issues, and have had emotional issues, and crying spells. I am scared that my other ovary will end up with cysts as well and I ultimately will not be able to have children. I guess its best to take this one day at a time.I hope everyone feels better soon.

I am 22 years old and had my right ovary removed last september due to a large cyst. I thought I was over it all, but i just found out I have a cyst in my left one (my now only one) and it has brought so many emotions back. Im young, and recently married, no kids but definitely want some. I'm not going to lie.. IM SO SCARED to lose my only ovary left.. my didnt care to lose one since the other would take over.. but the fact that my other one is being effected now is making me so emotional. And of course my husband says im over reacting.. which im not. I'd just hate not to be able to bare his children and i dont think he understands fully whats happening. Sad thing is, I've always been on birth control. My doctors are so confused as to why I'm getting them. The only conclusion they've come up with is that they gave me a 3 dose bc pill cycle (3 diff colors of bc pills before period pills) when i used to only take a 1 done bc pill cycle (one color bc pill before period pills). Youd think that my doctors would have changed my bc pill prescription after the first incident.. but I guess thats what happens when you deal with military doctors..

Oh my goodness!  That sounds awful!  I can imagine that something is pressing on my colon, because my typical IBS symptoms have definitely been intensified!  I pray we are all feeling better soon.  Hugs!

Thank you:) To answer your question,I've always had hormonal problems, irregular periods, painful periods etc....but the most recent that was the most alarming is my cervix was incredibly low (barely get a tampon in...sorry if that is too graphic)...but I hadn't remembered it ever being that low...also...can go over a week without going to bathroom. Come to find out it was because the cyst was pressing on my colon amongst other organs and pushing my uterus way down.

I am so sorry to hear about all that you are going through.  I can't believe the cyst was that big!  If you don't mind my asking, what were your symptoms?  I have had some very intense symptoms over this past week, so I have an appointment tomorrow.  I am so scared about what they might find.  This is a great place for information and support.  I am so thankful I found it!  Take care, and I hope you can get some answers to put you at ease.

I am 29 and recently had my right ovary removed due to a very large cyst (larger than my uterus) pressing on all my organs and uterus. I don't know if I want kids, but I am very scared that I will have to have my other ovary removed at some point. I was on birth control before this surgery and have continued...but it frightens me because I just had surgery 1 1/2 years ago to remove a few small cysts on my ovaries and clean out my uturus...plus remove my appendix....and already a cyst of that size forms within a year and a half.  I don't know what the adverse affects will be with only one ovary...and possibility of removing the other in the future.

Great news!!! It's been 2 weeks since I had the surgery. The cyst was benign and my doctor was appalled at the size of the cyst. It was a dermoid and was filled with hair, teeth, fat, and skin...so glad it's been removed from my body! I will start my birthcontrol in 2 days to help prevent any additional cyst on the one ovary I have left. I greatly appreciate all of the responses I have received. I have 2 more weeks before I can excercise but I'm ready to get back in action!

Hi, I am 28 and have had 2 operations to remove dermoid cysts from both ovaries.  The first was about 5/6 years ago- the cyst was benign and contained various bodily tissues.  Then they found another cyst last year and took what was left of the left ovary.  So I only have a little of my right one left.  I have put on weight because I got lazy/depressed/had other issues.  But hormones seem to be the same.  I want a test for this just to check the levels.  I have done a lot of research into egg-freezing and vitrification just to "bank" some eggs.  I know exactly how you feel- it's pretty scary.  I really want children one day and I'd be heartbroken if I couldn't have them.  Anyway, you will feel better, I'm sure the cyst will have been benign.

I know how stressful it can be to be so young and have this happen, but rest assured that your other ovary will eventually take over and do the function of both ovaries.  It may take a few months for that to happen, but it will.  You may notice for a few months that your are a little down, your period is off and/or a little unusual.  This is all normal.  It takes time for your body to heal on the inside, so give yourself plenty of time to heal.  Trudie is right when she says birth control should be looked into.  It MAY help you to keep from getting anymore cysts.  I hope you feel better and better each day!

After a few months your hormones should settle and your remaining ovary will produce eggs every month.  This should not affect your fertility.  I would suggest that you try birth control pills to stop the occurence of any more cysts until such time that you want to conceive.

It is routine procedure to test cysts for cancer but most of them are not.  It would be highly irresponsible for a cyst to not be tested. Loss of one ovary may cause some temporary hormone confusion until the remaining one takes over.  Periods may be irregular for a few months but it will stabilize over time.  Sorry, I am not in your age group or situation, but these are the typical side effects others have described after losing one ovary.  As long as the remaining ovary is healthy, you should still be able to have children in the future.  It is also fairly normal to be depressed, even easily prone to crying, after surgery.  It is a big deal for the body and all part of the healing process.
