Worried

Hi all, just joined this site.  Have been suffering with pain in my left lower abdomen for about a year now, went to GP several times and eventually was sent for scan which showed up some small fibroids and cysts on both ovaries!! was referred to consultant who didn`t seem particularly concerned about either!! have been put on Metformin for 3 months and have to be scanned in three months time to see if the cysts have shrunk!! and back to consultant in 4 months, all they seem to want is for me to have a mirena coil fittedm to lighten my period!! which I am not too keen on, but my main concern is this pain in the lefthand side which is continual, it occasionally subsides for a couple of days but then flares up quite bad (which it is at the moment). Is this normal??

Hi, there just a quick update!!!  I have gone from having "nothing to worry about" fibroids and ovarian cysts, to being told I have to have a full hysterectomy "sooner rather than later"!!!!! HELP was quite relieved when they first told me, but now I`m a little scared!!!!

I agree with the ladies above.  If your doctor is not concerned, then that is a good sign. The fact that you were put on Metformin leads me to believe they may think you have PCOS.  This can be a complicated diagnosis that is difficult ot control, since every woman is different.  It sounds like you are getting good care and need to be sure to have your follow-up visits.  There is a PCOS forum here on Medhelp that may be of interest to you.  Usually, when Metformin is prescribed for cysts, PCOS is suspected.  Here is the link to that forum:

I think JessRae had great recommendations for pain relief.  Heat was always the biggest help for me!  Please take care and keep us posted on how you are doing!

If they arent concerned about them, they might be believing them to be simple cysts, and possibly functioning cysts, that have to do with ovulation. Which would be why they have put you on something for 3 months time and want to rescan you then. Also, if they are still small in size and this is your first time with the cysts, that would be why. It sounds like they are wanting to try to shrink them in other ways before looking into other measures like surgey to drain/remove them.

For me, my first time dealing with the cysts, my left ovary has been all due to simply functioning cysts, that do shrink or dissolve themselves when i am on birth control for longer than the 21 days ( I stick with 3 months in a row, then have a period).

As for pain, try warm heating pads, and some advil and see if that helps. Also if you are not happy with the diagnosis then I would return to your family doctor and explain what the doctor said to you, and that you are not happy and would like a second opinion. I had that issue with my first trip to see my gyno, and i went right back to my family dr and she got to him right away explaining my symptoms more and made him take another further look into me instead of playing the wait and see game.

Whether they are concerned or not they need to make your pain better for you.  Being in pain all the time can wear on you and eventually it becomes exhausting and your quaility of life is effected.
