Hi everyone,
Some background on me: I’m almost 26, otherwise healthy, normal weight. I’ve never had surgery.
I have a cyst on my ovary that was 7cm and has now grown to be 9cm within a month (it’s simple/funcitonal, and is said to be an easy surgery). I was really reluctant to have surgery but decided to go through with it. I have a gynocologist that I’ve just starting going to, and she will be performing the surgery laparoscopically. I’ve just scheduled it today.
When I came back from my appointment about the surgery today, I told my coworker I was getting surgery and he asked me who the doctor was. I told him and his eyes bugged out. Apparently his wife had the same gyno and he had done some background research. While he found a bunch of positive reviews, as I had, apparently he dug way deeper (it was hard to even find now, when I was reallllly digging). It turns out that in another state, she has a board action against her for not reporting the suspenion of her surgical license. He didn’t know why her license was suspended because at that point he told his wife that she REALLY needs to switch docs.
I have now looked further into this. It looks like she was performing a similar surgery to mine, but there were some difficult adhesions and the surgery became complicated. The patient was not discharged post surgery because she was in so much pain. It turned out she had several colon perforations and it was not found in time, resulting in her death. There was a malpractice law suit, and the patient’s estate won, so I’m guessing it was at this point that my Dr. lost her license.
I really like this Dr. and have felt comfortable with her thus far. Should this be a deal breaker? I don’t have a great insurance plan, so there is some limit there, in terms of Drs. who take my insurance, but obviously I could find someone else. I can’t tell is this is a hugeee red flag (why didn’t she report that she lost her license, let alone the surgical license loss itself?), or if a lot of Drs. have this happen over the course of their careers.
Any advice is VERY appreciated. I’m kind of freaking out a lot.
