I'm so glad you are feeling a 'lil bit better and that you spoke with the doctor. Has the spitting up blood stopped yet? That, to me, is the most troublesome of your recovery problems. At least your pain seems more under control. Are you taking stool softeners? If you haven't already or don't, real soon, have a BM, I would think that would be reason for concern. Please, give your docotor a call if this is the case. Continue to take it easy Lisa, and keep on healing. I'm so glad things are slowly improving!!!!

Hugs,
Shari

Glad to hear you're feeling somewhat better, but still take it very easy for awhile.. Think it takes a little longer to heal on the inside .. Keep us posted,

Take care,
Sandy

I am slightly better,  althought the left side incision is sore as all get out.  I  also tried eating tomato soup last nite and couldnt because the acidity of it was burning my throat.  I seem to be spitting less blood, its almost gone now.  Last time I spit some up was when I ate a bowl of shredded wheat.   Maybe it was to rough!!  But hey, I havent BM''d since Wednesday, so Im worried about that too... (the things we talk about in here!)  I am passing some gas, so hopefully that will clear itself out in awhile.  Still taking it easy..   I did call the Doc and he said no need for alarm unless the icision looks infected or I get a fever.   Neither of which I have.   I suspect he just really cut into my muscle alot on the left side incision.   But thats the update.  I hope you all are doing well, your help and concern and sharing all of our stories helps to keep me sane!!  Thanks alot girls!   Lisa

Well?

HOW ARE YOU GIRL?  I read all these posts (yes, I was out driving last night)... lol

I was intubated and my throat hurt like nobody's business, but no blood.  And within 3-4 days, all the throat hurting was mostly gone.  It gets swollen like anything else when messed with, so I'm pretty sure your just scraped or sore, but CALL THE DOCTOR & LET US KNOW!  (hopefully you're sleeping so your body can heal and you won't answer this for hours)...

I've got a special prayer going up for you now...

love,
Donna

I had a very bad experience with a laprascopic surgery, so my point of view may be a bit different from the others.  Is your stomach really big and hard?  Is it really hard to breath when you sit or lay down?  The blood you are spitting up, it it bright red and how much?  Are you sick to your stomach?  Are you able to pee ok?

The reason I ask all of these questions is because when I had my last laprascopic surgery, they ripped my urter tube from my bladder and my abdomen filled with urine for 3 days.  I ended up with paratanitis and had to have a more invasive surgery to fix my urter tube.  I was in the hospital for a week.  If your incisions are swollen or puss is coming out of them, it may be an infection of the incision.  Calling you doctor is ALWAYS a good idea when you are unsure of something.  That is what they get paid for.  Aslo, the spitting up blood is concerning.  Give them a call, and let us know how you are doing.  Take care of yourself and get plenty of rest.  Kasie

I would call the Dr a.s.a.p..as I am thinking that maybe one of the incisions is infected??? that would explain burning and pain..soreness is normal..not so much pain I dont think...also , the blood concerns me and I would call the Dr regardless...its true better safe than sorry...Keep us posted....Gia :)

I'm going to agree with painterchic..Give the doctor a call. I didn't have the trach tube so I'm of no help to you on that one.
Regarding those incisions-- I had a laparascope in January -- same 3 little incisions and truthfully, I don't recall any real pain.. a little soreness .. I took the pain pills they gave me just in case and they gave me such a headache, I abandoned those for Tylenol! And that was enough to control the pain. . and that was the next day. I don't want to alarm you though and perhaps some people do have the pain, and the spitting up of the blood-- But , calling the doctor will ease your mind I'm sure..

Sandy

I think you should call the doctor. I know we are all different and heal differently, but better safe than sorry. Besides, just knowing will help you relax.
Hang in there,
Joelle

Forgot to answer the other question-
I had a arthoscopic surgery on my knee a few years ago, and they use the same kind of instruments to get inside the knee joint. I had three incisions also, and the two below my kneecap weren't too bad afterward, but the one above it on my thigh swelled up and burned and hurt like crazy. I think it's because the skin was a lot more tender in that spot and also that's where they put in the biggest trochar.
The other two were smaller.
Ask the doctor when you call about the spitting up blood why that spot hurts more.

I have had several surgeries in which I've had trach tubes and I never experienced spitting up blood from them. I did have an extremely sore throat afterwards and had some cuts/sores on my mouth too. It was very annoying but went away after a week or so.
Is the blood pinkish or is it really bright red? How much is coming up?
If it's just a little it may be that your throat was scratched a bit and is getting irritated after you eat something. In any event, I would definitely call the doctor asap to make sure it isn't something serious. Leave a message for him to call you back with the on-call service.

I just called my sister, shes been a nurse for 12 years,  she said a little blood is normal, but not constant bright blood, so hopefully thats ok.   I just took a vicaden and a xanax, so hopefully this will help. Its just really weird to me that only one of the incisions is has a burning and very painful feeling to it when the other 2 dont.   And I dont know whether to Sit stand or lie down!!!!!  lol   Thanks  to all you guys for responding so quickly,  I have a tendency to panic when Im clueless....     Lisa

Hi
I'm assuming you were intubated (tube in mouth, down throat during procedure)?
I would contact the doctor to report spitting up of blood.
Is your pain relieved at all by pain meds?

Dear Lisa,

I'm sorry you are in so much pain. Are you taking your pain meds regularly? If the pain is still out of control, you should give the doctor a call and explain this to him/her. I don't know anything about spitting up blood from the throat tube (I didn't have a tube), but hopefully, someone else will have an answer for you about that. What ever you do, don't swallow the blood. That will make you extremely sick to your tummy!!!! Were you spitting up blood in the hospital, too? Please take care of yourself and let us know how you are doing. Good luck, honey.

Gentle Hugs,
Shari

I can't advise on whether this is normal or not but the blood is very concerning.  Can you call the hospital or doctor to get some advice?
