I had cysts inside both my ovaries removed July 2, 2015. So, yes it is possible. I'm still awaiting my post op appointment on Friday, but from what the doc said to the family after surgery all should be fine.
In answer to "Can the cyst be removed if it is within my ovary and not on my ovary?" - If you have a surgeon with those skills. You could liken it to "shelling out" a seed from a grape although the proportions would be different because there is probably quite a bit of cyst tissue in relation to the ovarian tissue. But the ovary will usually continue functioning even if a good amount of it is removed. Hope this helps!
Thank you for your response! Can the cyst be removed if it is within my ovary and not on my ovary?
Welcome to the community. I am sorry you are dealing with this.
MOST ovarian cysts, even complex ones, are benign (non-cancerous). It is not clear if yours is complex or hemorrhagic. Hemorrhagic cysts are benign. If you do not have a family history for ovarian cancer then your lifetime risk is LESS THAN 2% (1.3% per U.S. government statistics).
No, your ovaries should NOT have to be removed if the cyst is benign. You should not even have to lose the one with the cyst if you have a surgeon with good cystectomy (cyst removal) skills. Our sex organs (uterus, ovaries, and tubes) have lifelong functions. Studies have shown that the ovaries produce hormones up to at least age 80 and these hormones are essential to every cell in our body. Do a web search for "bilateral oophorectomy long term health" to understand the many repercussions / adverse effects / increased health risks associated with ovary removal.
I was rushed into surgery for a 9.5cm ovarian cyst. My surgeon waited for the results of the frozen section biopsy while I was in the operating room. Even though it came back benign, he proceeded to remove all my organs. I wish I had understood how common this is and had protected myself by revising the surgical consent form to state specifics of what could and could not be removed and under what conditions.
The effects happened "fast and furious"...RAPID aging, inability to sleep, horrible memory loss, SEVERE depression, inability to think straight and concentrate, anxiety, extreme irritability over every little thing, vision loss (very blurry vision), loss of maternal and romantic feelings, minor hot flashes, etc. etc. etc.
If this cyst needs to be removed (they sometimes resolve on their own), I hope you have an ethical and skilled surgeon who will preserve your ovary. However, even if the ovary does need to be removed, you should not need to lose your other ovary.
