cyst found with symptoms, is this cancer

by rach555, Nov 08, 2009 11:27AM
hi...for months i have been having terrible lower back pain, abdominal pain and recently a very tender stomach and upper abdominal area...with stomach ache all the time. it has been gradually getting worse recently. also i have constant gas, burping, passing wind...wind rolling around in my stomach and bloating...some days my stomach is huge...but always bloated. i had an ultra sound done and they found a 3.5cm cyst which appeared to have solid and fluid areas...but they said no more than that. they are doing a ca-125 test...but meanwhile i am terribly uncomfortable and really worried that this may be ovarian cancer. 6 months ago a had a myemectomy to have a 17 by 17cm fibroid removed and i am sure they said they checked my ovaries and they were fine. i am really worried...can you help?

Benign cysts can cause those symptoms as well without it meaning cancer.  At 3.5 cm it is not that big yet (surgery is often recommended starting around 5 cm) but it is complex by having both fluid and solid areas.  Because of the solid areas, it is a stronger candidate for earlier removal even at smaller sizes. Complex cysts tend to make doctors want more information which is also why the CA-125 test was requested.  If they do recommend surgery, try to have it done by a gynecologist/oncologist (better surgeons with better experience) unless you already really like the doctor you are seeing.

How old are you?  Pre- or post-menopause?  They consider many things when trying to decide treatment.  Just the symptoms should make you want to remove it so that life can return to normal. It sounds like you are getting correct medical attention so far.

Hopefully the doctor will explain things better to you soon and it will all work out to a good outcome for you. I am so sorry you have a new medical issue so soon after the fibroid problem, but whatever it is, it must be something relatively new since it was not noticed 6 months ago.
