Hi Melody,

I have the same concern.  They found I had multiple cysts on both ovaries last year, did surgery to remove them due to the size, and now a year later, I have them again like grape clusters on both ovaries again.  I went on the Yaz BC after the last time to keep them from coming back.  But I guess it didn't work.  I am only 34.  I don't know what to think?  I am waiting for the Dr to decide what to do this time.  But the thought of going through surgery, even though the laproscopic surgery wasn't too bad, again, isn't appealing.  It is hard to get specific information with this type of issue.  I'm willing to try whatever to keep them from coming back.

Some are just more prone to them than others.  Possibly all women get cysts at some time or another but the majority resolve on their own and are never noticed.  Also once an ovary becomes cystic, it can form a habit of doing so.

Mostly they are the result of ovulation when the ovulation follicle, instead of breaking down, fills up with fluid and gets larger.  It then can break down later or remain for awhile longer or get so big it needs removal.  Then there are more abnormal cysts like dermoids, complex cysts, etc.  Why those occur is a bit more mysterious.  And then the worst case scenario is ovarian cancer, thankfully rare, but cysts put doctors on alert for the possibility of cancer.

One possible cause of cysts is too much estrogen.  Besides the estrogen the ovary produces naturally, artificial ones are present in food, drugs, environmental toxins, etc., and it's believed to adversely affect ovary behavior.  That's one of the reasons why birth control pills help many women to get ovaries to work properly again.

There has also been an article stating that NSAIDs like Advil can prevent a normal ovulation follicle from breaking down, leading to cyst formation.  Yet Advil is a favorite remedy for menstrual cramps.  We can't win!  It's been said that Omega-3 (like fish oil) helps ovaries.  I've been taking fish oil for years, but still got a monster cyst.  Sigh.
