by josie546, Sep 27, 2009 05:25PM
im 16 years old and i was told i have a 3 inch dermoid ovarian cyst. i have not yet seen the gynocologist because there are no open appointments. is it possible to rupture the cyst? im a cheerleader and im afraid of it rupturing while I cheer. what would happen if it did rupture?
thanks

How was the cyst found?  If you have not seen a gyn, what type of doctor found it?  Many doctors can misdiagnose these things.  Gyn problems are best left to a gyn to diagnose.

Is it really 3 inches and not 3 centimeters (that's the common measurement used, not inches)?

Nobody would want a dermoid cyst to rupture, if you really have one.  They contain too many solid features/cells that would be dispersed into your abdomen, could lead to adhesions, not to mention the pain which could be quite bad for an extended period of time.  I cannot say with any certainty if being a cheerleader is strenous enough exercise to cause a rupture.  If you feel pain, though, treat it as a sign that your body is telling you to stop.

The best thing you can do at this point is get an expert medical opinion, preferably from a gynecologist.  My first gyn exam was at age 17....ironically it was for a cyst problem!

I was having an MRI on my his for possible bone damage when it was found. it has been revied by about 3 doctors. they said inches to us but that seemed strange to me too. they said it was about the size of an orange. i have an appt for the gyn on oct 7 (that was the soonist appt). So ive just been trying to take it easy. it doesnt really hurt more when i cheer. but i t does hurt. i guess i will know more after seeing the gyn

Hi, one of the main things you need to be careful of is that the cyst could twist your ovary and cut off the blood supply (this is called torsion), this can be brought on by strenuous exercise and it happened to me.  My dermoid was the size of an orange too.  I would suggest taking it easy till you see the gynaecologist, its only next week.  Good luck!
