large cyst and missing ovary

So, I'm going in on the 13th to have my cyst removed. My doc says it is 13cm by 14cm and I just cannot imagine how he's going to get it out laparoscopically... but he says he can. We shall see. My concern, beyond not knowing exactly what the cyst is, is that it is fully contained within my left ovary but he cannot find my right ovary at all. I'm afraid that I will come out of the surgery with medically induced menopause (I'm 41). I guess I don't really have a question, just hoping for some reassurance that a) a cyst that large can come out such a small incision and b) that medically induced menopause won't be as bad as I'm hearing or c) any good thoughts any of you would like to bestow. I'm just nervous and not ready to leave my children behind.

My surgery was on April 13 and I was back to work on the 18th (as per my Doc... I could've happily stayed home for a few more days). My supposed 10 cm ovarian cyst was found to be more that twice that size (surprise! I wondered why I always felt so bloated) and they took it out through my belly button incision. I still have a few random twinges and fluttery feelings in my belly, but other than my belly button incision, I am not having any major pain.

I would definitely go see your Doc over your concerns. Hey, it's your body, you know what feels wrong and you can never be too careful, right?

I didnt have the gas pains either really although when my bowel re-started it was quite an experience!! In terms of pain in general one week after surgery yes I was still in a lot of pain but I kind of felt the opposite- my body felt completely empty and like everything inside was swishing around- I felt pretty nauseous all the time. my wound did become very hard about a week and a half in and then oozed horrible stuff- I called my doc and they came out to see me and it turned out I had an infection- antibiotics cleared it up. If you are worried at all then call the doc and I am sure they will come and check you out. I expect it is all normal but no point in putting yourself through more than you already have!
Best of luck and let us know hoe you get on :)

Well, my surgery went well. They were able to find and save my right ovary (yay!!) but my left ovary is indeed gone and there was quite a bit of adhesion found and removed. It's been almost a week now though and I'm still in major pain. I can barely move and my abdomen feels full and hard all the way into my ribcage. The gas never became a problem and i would think would be gone by now. My husband suggested I may be bleeding internally and now that's all I can think of. Can anyone tell me if what I'm experiencing is actually normal and I'm just (as usual) worrying too much?

Thank you!

Thanks everyone. The big day is here. I'm preparing to go in for my weight reduction... um, I mean my mass removal surgery. I'm sure it will go fine. Thank you for the good thoughts and uplifting words.

Wanted to wish you well for your surgery tomorrow. I had a very large cyst removed last november through a small incision- they drained it until it was small enough to cut out- mine was about 25cm and they drained 23 litres of fluid from it! Was quite an ordeal but am happily out the other side now- and as you are looking for that silver lining- I lost 3 and 1/2 stone- which is about 50lbs!!! Amazing! Good luck for tomorrow and a speedy recovery.
All the best :)

I am going though it all over again but yes both times I have had massive bloating and gained weight. Try not to worry, although I know that is easier said then done, but the less you worry the better it is for your body. Good luck to you, once again I hope everything goes well and you have a quick recovery.

Thank you both for the info and support. Deep down I'm sure I'll be fine. I just worry and anything can happen during surgery... ya know. :)

Nana, did you experience any bloating or weight gain from yours? I have put on a decent amount of weight and it sure would e nice if some of it was related. (See, I'm looking for a bright side?)

I have heard of this before, and this person had a very similar size cyst removed whilst 25 weeks pregnant! After all the pain and emotional trauma you must have been through already I am sure they are planning to do the right thing for you! I hope it all goes to plan for you x

In 2006 I had an 11.7 cm x 13 cm cyst removed laparoscopically, yours is a little bigger but not by much so I am pretty confident it can be done. Orignally they thought my cyst was in my RT ovary but it turned out it was actually in my left. The U/S I had a month ago could not see my LT ovary but the one I had last week could, I was told that it can depend on full bowel etc as to where it is and if it can be seen so maybe it is the same for the RT side. I think it is pretty natural to be scared but the women on this site are awesome and will help to put your mind at ease as much as they can. I hope everything goes well.
