ovarian cyst during pregnancy

I'm currently 17-week pregnant and had been diagnosed with a sepated ovarian cyst on my right ovary. I never have any symptoms from the this cyst. The doctors said the I have a 10% chance of having ovarian cancer.  I'm scheduled for surgery to remove the cyst (and my right ovary). I don't know if I made the right decision. Can you give me some opionion. Thanks.

Hello I understand how upsetting and scary this must be for you.  In 2005 I was pregnant and had 2 lg ovarian cysts that were growing quite rapidly (believed to be cancerous). I was scheduled to have a laparotomy.  I was terrified at the idea of having surgery while pregnant but also of that big C-word.  Two days before Christmas I had the surgery. I awoke to the news that baby was doing fine and I DID NOT have cancer.  I went on to have a smooth pregnancy and a healthy baby boy!!!
I am now pregnant again at 9wks and found out I have 2 ovarian cysts one being 3.3 cm and the other 4.7cm, so still relatively small but after the surgery the first time I was told increased hormones due to pregnancy can cause them to grow quicker. Living in a different province for this pregnancy I am curious to see how the dr's with handle it here.  With my son I had several u/s to monitor for growth, ect.  As of right now technically my first u/s wasn't scheduled until Aug 31 which puts me at just over 5mths. I ended up having an u/s earlier due to a trip to emerg becasue of pain and bleeding, so we will see if they give me another one sooner.
I will be thinking of you, let us know how it goes.

Hi there - Just wanted to let you know that I was in the same boat, and everything turned out fine.  My cyst was found when I was 11 weeks pregnant.  It was over 10cm, and septated.  I decided to wait, under the guidance of a gynecological oncologist and a neo-natal specialist, and had a normal pregnancy and delivered a perfect baby, vaginally, with no complications from the cyst whatsoever.  We then watched it for a few months, no change, so I had it removed laproscopically, and it was a mucinous cystadenoma.  However, my Dr's did not feel that I was high risk for ovca, hence the waiting period.  I agree with Trudie that if your Dr has reason to believe that you are at risk, you should have it out, and trust that your baby will be fine.  I highly recommend a visit to a gyn-onc for assessment if you haven't already.  Good luck!

Each case has to be looked at separately.  If your doctor says your risk is that high then having it removed sooner rather than later is the best thing for you.  I know there have been quite a few other women that have come through here who have had cysts successfully removed during their pregnancy.  I can't imagine how hard this must be for you now.  Good luck and I hope all goes well.
