ovarian cyst

Hi....
My recent ultrasound/doppler report  says that that i'm having cyst in right ovary.
The report is as such "SMOOTH WALLED CYST 5.8x4.8 cms ISSEEN NO SOLID COMPONENTS OR HEMORRHAGE. NO CONGESTION OF FOLLICLES IN RIGHT OVARY"
I want to know can this cyst be cured with medicine or asurgery is required? Is it fatal? Can it lead to infertility? Can it lead to cancer?

Hi,
First let me ask.... what was the reason for the U.S.? Were you having symptoms? Secondly.. calm down and take a deep breath.. I know it's scary .. But cysts are very very common at your age.And 95 % are benign . Most of the time they will resolve on their own.. Most Drs' will elect to monitor them .. Did you have the abdominal ultrasound or the Transvaginal Ultrasound?  By monitoring, it simply means to have another "look see" in 3-4 months. Please try not to worry and check out the "Health Topics " at the top right of this page. Was it through a Gyn, that you had the US? If not , then by all means make an appt. with a Gynecologist. Do you have another appointment with your Dr.?  Sorry for all the questions..

Most of all... Try not to worry.. you've come to the right spot... there are lots of us that have had cysts and even surgery in the unlikely event you need it !! Keep us posted..

Take care,
Sandy

A  smooth walled cyst with no solid components means it's probably fluid filled. It's size is about the size of a small lemon.Have you had a follow-up with your gyn to go over the test results? Cysts are very normal , especially in pre-menopausal women. Depending on it's type, size, your age, and other factors, your doctor could opt to do a " watchful waiting" over the course of a few menstrual cycles to see if it resolves on it's own. There are medications that can be used to shrink some cysts.  Other cysts that are too large or are a type that won't shrink need to be removed, can be removed with a laparoscopy or laparotomy.
You should also know that 95%  of cysts are benign ( non-cancerous) so don't let yourself get overwhelmed.
I suggest you read the cyst information pages listed in the heath forum on the upper right of the cyst forum. Just click on heath pages and then scroll down to cyst information( there a 2 links) with a wealth of information.
If you don't have an appointment with your gyn, make one to have a consultation to find out how he ( or she) wants to manage your cyst and bring a list of all the questions you might have to the appointment.
good luck and let us know how you made out
Valerie
