robotic (Da Vinchi) cystectomy

Hello!

I had robotic (Da Vinchi) cystectomy done 52 hours ago. I'm very happy with my experience and will suggest this procedure to everyone. Initially I scheduled basic laparascopy but after some research I have changed my mind. I feel very good abut my decision. Just a brief medical history: first ovarian cyst 4.8-5 cm on one ovary first time diagnosed 4weeks ago. I had 4 tiny incisions done and my pain was well controlled by medication. I really appreciate all the tips I have learned on this website. One thing that really bothered me when I woke up after anaesthesia was nausea. I was very proactive about it with my nurses and I had them page my MD to make sure I go home with Rx for nausea. Also my MD prescribe Nusinta instead of persocete (this drug cause less constipation) but still I was very proactive with my bowels. I took stool soften at PM after my surgery and had some prunes. When I didn't had any 'outcome' next day I took 2 senna pills (that caused a bit of cramping) but gave me relief and I was able to 'emplty' myself 48hours after surgery. I also noticed shoulder pain and inflated abdomen but I knew its normal. I'm not using aggressive pain killers and just take Tylenol 500 twice a day. I'm planning to get back to work taking only 6 days off (4 working and weekend).
My list of things to get ready prior to your surgery:
-loose gown that you can wear
-cotton comfy underwear (hiphuggers from VS worked great for me)
-apple juice and ice - helps with nausea
-apple sauce and bananas - great snack
-cough drops for throat (it will be sore from intubation)
-saltines, egg, mash potato - soft diet helped with bowel management

The day of surgery
-wear comfy sweats and sports bra with sneakers and loose top
-pads and comfy underwear
-ask for pain and nausea Rx
-be your own advocate with RNs. I had few nurses and my last one was pushing me to get up too quickly. I had to be firm and actually be my own advocate. You will know if you can get up or not.

Im having one too...dr said I'd go home the same day, and about a week recovery.  I don't know yet if I'll have my ovary removed. Good luck to you.

Thanks for posting this. I have been wondering about recovery times for robotic assisted laparoscopic cystectomy.  Do you mind if I ask if your ovary was removed as well?  I'm also wondering if you left the hospital the day of surgery, or stayed overnight, and also if you required much help at home?  

If it's not obvious, I may be having this procedure myself, so I'm looking ahead, wondering what I may have to plan for!  Thanks for sharing your experience.
